Hey guys...I just bought this I6000 a few minutes ago. I was going to buy an outrageous deal posted in a magazine I got a few days ago, but found out about the 750 off if spend 1900 or more coupon and have gotten alot more than the price I would have paid on the "OD". I need this laptop for college..for the next 3 yrs atleast...do you guys think its ok?

That's good. It is the one I wanted. But since there was a 40% off coupon, I got the XPS gen2.

Call Dell and modify your order before it ships. Downgrade the RAM to 1 DIMM, it'll save you money, especially because you can put a gig of Kingston DDR2 533 PC2-4200 in for $100 shipped from Newegg. Never upgrade your RAM through Dell, they rape you on prices. Not to mention the 6000 comes with DDR2 400 PC2-3200 which is slower anyway and doesn't take advantage of your bus speed.

Oh, and if this drops your order down too low for the $750 off to work, upgrade to the 9-cell to bring it back up for the discount.

jlbrightbill: I was considering that when I ordered. Although I would still be over $1900 if I downgrading my memory, it would save about $70. You do have a point that with 100 I could buy a gig of 533. I am tempted to just let the order be, but if you can give me a link from newegg of the ram I may purchase that would work with this machine, I would glady consider re-ordering my laptop before its too late. Thanks again.

It's back up to $101, so $105 shipped. Definitely downgrade your RAM, you're literally flushing money down the toilet if you upgrade through Dell. Not only are you saving money, you're getting 533 instead of 400. I have 2x512 in dual channel, but benchmarks have shown the performance boost is negligible unless there's an 800 FSB to take advantage of the full capability of dual channel. Sonoma/Alviso with the 533 really doesn't benefit, so 1GB in single channel will perform just as well.
I have almost the same config as you, except shorter warranty (1 year- I'll extend later if I want), XGA, and 40gb (upgradable as well). The last $750 off $1499 deal didn't have the SXGA. My config is:
Pentium M 750 1.86
1GB (2x512) DDR2 533 PC2-4200 (dual)
X300 128
XP Pro (educational discount at my university - $8 :D)
Office 2003 Pro (see above - $8)
Canon Pixma MP130 All-in-one
Mobile Edge Notebook Backpack
All for under $1000. I'm happy with it, and it works for college student usage.

thanks I did downgrade the ram. I made an EXTREMELY dumb mistake while calling Dell. I waited the 30 minutes, and the hard-to-understand-outsourced employee asked for an order number. I asked if either one mattered (since I had two from the order since a dell printer came along with the laptop). Given rushing to give the first order number i can find after waiting 30 minutes while watching tv, and the hard to understdand employee, I gave the dell printer order number, and got sent back to the first menu(because there is a different # for accessories)!
So...I had to wait another 30 minutes, but this time I could undertsand what he was saying, and he helped me perfectly...so with 256 RAM downgrade the laptop came out to $1192

Dell's employees are...urgh, it's such a pain. I've spent a total of about 4 hours on the phone with them in the past week, and only one of them was good. I wish I had her ID # to ask for when I call again, because she spoke really good English, was friendly, and really made an effort to help me out. Unfortunately, most of them are pretty bad.
