Re: Dell Outlet
This has been discussed before, there are some really good deals to be had there. I don't think there's any problem, but I'd be sure to get a warranty on a refurb unit.

Re: Dell Outlet
Dell referbs usually come with a 1 year warranty. You can upgrade it to 2, 3 or 4 years though. They do have some very good deals. I got my XPS M140 for under $700 with the following specs. PM 1.73, 1GB DDRII, 60 GB HD, DVD +/- Burner, Wi-Fi / BT, 9 cell (7hrs). It would have cost me $1400 to buy this new from dell, with these specs. 50% off! NOT BAD! GO DELL OUTLET! I have purchased 2 of these for my family already and they work fine, so I ordered myself one. :)

Took a chance on a Dell refurbed D610 in early December 2005. Couldn't be more pleased with the decision. Got a 14" SXGA+, X300, 1.8GHz, 80GB HD, DVD±RW, 1GB RAM, XP Pro. Would have cost $1900 new but saved over $600, got the D610 and 3 year accidential breakage warranty for $1157.
No dead pixels and the machine looks new. Only way to tell is the red REFURBISHED sticker on the bottom.
I would have went for XP Home and just a CDRW/DVD if I was buying new but I just found a good deal I couldn't pass up. My main requirements were 14" SXGA+ with X300 dedicated graphics. After that the memory, hard drive, etc can be upgraded later unlike the video.
I'd certainly do it again. You just have make a wishlist of your specs and wait to see if it shows up. There were several times I almost pulled the trigger on something I didn't want in the outlet or going for new. Just glad I had patience.

Re: Dell Outlet
i bought a notebook on dell's outlet (inspiron 2100). it lasted me through 3 years of law school and a year following. no problems at all. however, having browsed the outlet and checking prices against what's available new with coupons, i'd say the deals aren't that great... you really gotta search to find something to make it worth your while. however, if you can find a good deal, then more power to you.

I've bought several Dell refurbs - no problems with any of them but I would at least get a 1 yr warranty in most cases.

Re: Dell Outlet
I just bought an M140 from the Dell Outlet and like jasonck08 I got a very nice system for under $700. I ended up with the 1.73, 1GB DDR2, 2200 wireless, CDRW/DVD combo and XP MCE. One thing I learned though is you have to be quick. I just happened into the outlet by chance and honestly wasn't looking at the M140 since it was out of budget for me at the then $999 starting cost. I found one for the same price and configured the same as above with a DVDRW and XP Pro instead of the combo drive and MCE but since I wasn't actively looking at the M140 I had to do some quick research on it. Well, I wasn't quick enough because it was gone. When I bought mine there were over 20 pages of M140's alone, now there are less than 5 pages of laptops total... they really do move fast.
As for reliability I can't answer that. Mine is still with UPS and will be delivered today. I've purchased refurb from Apple before with zero problems (one of the laptops I was looking at was a refurb $799 12" iBook) and can't see Dell as being any different.... other than the fact that I can't just walk into the Apple store and talk to a human with my Dell... well I could but I'm sure it wouldn't do any good :D
So far I'm pleased. I got an awesome laptop for an awesome price and a better warranty than two of the new laptop's I was considering.

Re: Dell Outlet
For the inspiron lines, there is almost no point to the outlet. But jeez, on the lattitude lines, its almost insane. I save like 600 bucks in addition to the 250 dollar small business discount given on an x1. Not to mention the warranty is cheaper. I can get an X1 (which I'm really itching for) for about 1400 with tax, shipping, and a comprehensive 3 year warranty. Thats with 512meg (which I will upgrade myself), 60 gig hdd, 2 batteries, and bluetooth
