Question:
buying a 14inch Ibook
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My primary reason for buying this thing is for: internet surfing, emails, and real basic usage. I plan on enrolling in an on-line university to finish my degree. My question is: Do any of you guys use an apple for online degrees? Any compatibility concerns with sending assignments or other documents to someone with a "pc"? If so, I was told I could get microsoft office to solve that problem. Anyone have to to that and was it easy?
I've been playing around with the macs at my local comp usa store and i'm finally ready to buy (unless someone here can direct me to a better laptop for my needs.) I am nuts about that mac product though!!

Re: buying a 14inch Ibook
there shouldn't really be any problems unless there is a proprietary windows only software. But if it is just pdf, and the standard office files. No problem what so ever.
For office there is office for mac, but unless you have a full student status (and hence discount) it might be kina pricey. For alternatives, there is the cheaper apple works (i dont think it is that great), open office, and iwork (but no spreadsheet, i haven't used it, so cant really talk about it)

The software that comes with an iBook can read Word documents. .exe files won't work on a Mac, but a lot of other things will. Go with the Mac.

OpenOffice is great especially if you are not a heavy office user. At least try it out before giving Micro$oft your money.

learflyer,
you may want to check the refurb store at Apple's website. I ordered a refurbished iBook yesterday for $699. Free FedEx ground shipping.
New computer warranty and you can purchase AppleCare it you wish. I have been pleased with Mac refurbs.
CompUSA DOES NOT accept returns on notebooks, merchandise credit only.
Comp's Mac inventory is seldom the newest either.
good luck with your purchase.
