Question:
DDR2 667mhz Ram
Hello,
I want to upgrade my 9400's memory. I have 2 x 512mb of DDR2 667mhz ram and want to return those dimms to dell and upgrade to a 1gb dimm and then purchase a second 1gb stick somewhere else (cause i heard it would be cheaper elsewhere).
On Dell's website, they only have DDR2 533mhz ram they don't have any 667mhz ram listed for sale. Does anyone know why, is there a shortage of this ram?
Crucial has DDR2 667mhz ram for sale but it's really expensive. I priced 533mhz ram at crucial to dell's 533mhz ram and the dell ram was about $25 CAD cheaper. I thought dell ram was supposed to be expensive? Is there a better place to buy ram then crucial that is cheaper then dell?
Assuming dell will eventually have the 667mhz ram and ship it to me, is there a problem mixing a stick from dell and a stick from a different vendor?
Thanks for any help?

Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
Well you might want to try Zipzoomfly.com or newegg.com
I don't know if they ship to Canada though. The other thing...the performance increase from 533 to 667 is almost nothing 2-7% I think...you won't be able to notice an extreme difference. I personally would stick with 533 it is cheaper by about $25-$50 a Gig stick.
Also, Dell usually goes with Samsung brand RAM. Transcend is a Samsung subsidiary of Samsung....you could also consider them. :)

Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
667 is brand new and therefore will cost more. comparing 667 at newegg to dell's 533 and saying they are comporable in price is unfair. if you think newegg (or others) have high prices for 667 ram, wait until you get a price from dell.

Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
I wasn't trying to compare dells 533 to Neweggs 667...I was saying in general. When I looked at the 667 on newegg vs the 533 on newegg...there was about a $25 difference...if you were looking at more premium brands it almost hit $50.
I would re-consider trying to get the 1GB stick from Dell for your 512's they will charge up the wazoo...just by the new 2GB and sell the old stuff on Ebay. At least you will get some of the money back. :)

Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
There is no reason I couldn't remove one 512MB and add a 1GB it's not on of the memory banking types whatever its called is it? This would make it 1.5GB and eventually would prolly upgrade to 2GB.

Well you would lose your DDR2 functionality. But on the other hand more ram is going to be better of even without the DDR2 speeds. :)

So by not having identical ram chips in the lappie i will lose the dual channel capabilities until I upgrade both to the 1GB?
Answer:
Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
Well if you are running a 512MB stick and a 1GB stick you will have 1GB of dual channel. The rest will be used normally.
Answer:
Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
Alright because I thought you were saying that it wouldn't run Dual Channel at all.....So this would definately be beneficial because I would still have 1GB running dual and the 512 remaining running normal. I would for sure see improved performance!

Re: DDR2 667mhz Ram
Exactly...it is better to have more than faster ram when you are talking under 1GB of RAM. :)
