HP dv1000 or Dell xps140???

Question:
HP dv1000 or Dell xps140???
OK, so I'm pretty new at the laptop thing and will be buying my first one real soon. I think i've narrowed it down to 2 laptops (but am willing to check out other). I'm lookin at the dell xps 140 and the hp dv1000. I chose those two mainly cuz I'm looking for something that isn't too big. Something that i can pack around all day at school and not die, yet something that is big enough to enjoy a dvd or two. I think i've figured out that i can either one at about the same price. From what i've gathered the dell might out do the hp in performance, but i'm not really even sure of that. I'll mostly use the notebook for school work, internet, music and dvd's, and the like. Nothing TOO big. I'm not a big gamer, but who knows...i could in the future like a game or two. But thats not really the important issue to me.
Bottom line... you all sound like some of you really know what your talking about. Do any of you have valid oppinions on which of these two machines is better?
Also, any oppinions or experience with the software that is opptional on teh systems? Namely the Mydvd software, and the photo editing stuff? Is it worth it? Good software or would it be better just buying other?
Thanks a bunch, i look forward to some feedback :decision:

Re: HP dv1000 or Dell xps140???
Well, I'm not really a Dell fan - I personally don't like their notebooks. I would take the dv1000 over the XPS M140, because they're virtually the same machine in many respects (Intel GMA 900, screen, etc). However, the HP does have a few key features that I think are noteworthy - It has a QuickStart feature, which is nice for trips, because you don't have to boot the OS to watch a movie/play MP3s. Also I believe that the HP will have a more solid build quality than the Dell will, which is very important. Although, Dell may have the dv1000 in tech support (in general, Dell's support is worse than HP's, but their specialized XPS support may be a little better than HP's), although I do like HP's tech support. Overall, I'd pick the dv1000, better notebook, better build quality.

I second the HP DV1000. I've seen one in person...and I was impressed; I was never a big fan of HP...but after seeing the DV1000, my opinion on them has changed.
HP DV1000 > Dell XPS M140

Re: HP dv1000 or Dell xps140???
I would take DV1000 without even thinking twice.
DV1000 advantages
very proven laptop, reliable, good performance.
comes with nice remote and QuickPlay feature, card reader, etc and Media cable which works like a docking station
has very nice altec Lansing speakers
With all these still weighs few ounces less than XPS M140
Finally support is way better than dell.
XPS M140 advantages:
With bigger battery I think dell may give little more run time thab DV1000 with bigger battery( by 30 min or so)

The only advantage the Dell XPS has is the specialized support, which is based in America. However, that wouldn't make me take the XPS M140 over the dv1000.
dv1000 gets my vote.

just for your info.... the m140 has a "QuickPlay" feature whuch dell calls "Media Direct" and it has a media card reader with the express card expansion. The m140 also gets around 5 hours of battery with wi-fi and and app or too running. I really havent look over the hp, but the m140 is a great buy.

Re: HP dv1000 or Dell xps140???
I just purchased a Dell M140 and have had a few days to play with it. I looked into the HPs and talked to friends. I will tell you why I went with the Dell.
Components:
The HP offers slow hard drives. I mean 4200 RPM for the 100 GB is really slow. Considering the hard drive is one of the slowest computer components when it comes to apparent usage speed, this is really slow. Dell offers a 100 GB hdd at 7200 RPM. If you are like me you would regret not getting the most storage and at the very least, the fastest speed. This HP offers M processors, which is good. They are the same Intels that Dell offers. I went with the 770. Don't buy the Celeron. The graphics cards look pretty similar. The other components (screen, battery) are similar enough not to bring up. I went with the bigger battery, DVD burner (free upgrade at time), 1 GB mem. I can't tell if the HP has buttons on the front, but the Dell does. It's Media Center Edition is supposed to allow it to play media without loading Windows, but I haven't played with it much. As far as the Altec Lansing speakers on the HP, the Dell's speakers sound about as good as any other laptop speakers. You can't expect great sound out of these things anyway. If you want good sound, get external speakers.
Ports:
The Dell comes with 4 USB 2.0, HP comes with 3 (I read at least one online review that said the M140 has only 2 USB ports; It comes with 4). The HP has a digital media reader. I was told on the phone the XPS came with one, but didn't receive one. I still have to call back on it. I don't think it should be a deciding factor anyway.
Software:
The Dell comes with Windows XP Media Edition. I haven't decided if I like it or not, but it is better than Home Edition. I did not buy any extra software. Take the McAfee, I can buy it seperate for cheaper than Dells price. You can find good free media players for you DVDs and other media playback and picture viewing.
Warranty:
I purchased the 4-year Premium package (includes complete care) from Dell. I have a few friends that used to use HP. They had a lot of trouble with getting warranty work done. My friends with Dells have had a much easier time. One guy has been getting parts replaced under the plan for years. He's even got like 3 brand new upgraded computers when they stopped offering what he had. He has even ran his over with a truck and Dell promptly replaced it. Stories vary, but in my experience when something breaks (assume it will) Dell does a better job--even with the non-XPS systems. Plus Dell offers a 4 year plan, where HP only has 3. It's up to you which plan you get, but I highly recommend getting a complete care package. Maybe if it's not the top of the line model options you will want to buy a new laptop in a couple years anyway, then it's not prudent to buy 4 years. You get the idea. I went with the 4 year plan. The Dell XPS systems are supposed to have their own special technical support division as well.
Online Reviews:
I believe you will find performance comparisons between these 2 in the M140s favor. Take the cnet.com's review of the M140. It actually compares the M140 and dv1000. The Dell beats the HP on application performance and battery life by a longshot.
So that's my input and why I would go with the Dell

That's one heck of a setup! Well, I can understand why you went for the Dell. Glad to see that you did your research. ;)
If you want to write a review, that would be great - just contact abaxter (Andrew), and let him know. You'll get paid. :)

The CNet test about the battery life, they used Dell with 8-cell where as HP DV1000 with standard battery.
"The XPS M140's big nine-cell battery triumphed in our drain tests"
And also this is how did they compare laptop( it shows how dumb they are) These are entirely different configuration. Different CPUs( even the generation of CPU), different HDDs, different RAMs, different Batteties etc. Actually that is almost more than year old DV1000 with DDR266.
Dell XPS M140
Windows XP Media Center; 2.13GHz Intel Pentium M 770; 1GB DDR2 SDRAM PC3200 533MHz; Mobile Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express chipset 128MB; Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 80GB 5,400rpm
HP Pavilion dv1000
Windows XP Home; 1.5GHz Intel Pentium M760; 512MB DDR SDRAM PC2100 266MHz; Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME up to 64MB; Fujitsu MHT2080AT PL 80GB 4,200rpm
As per support wise, I had worst of all experiences with DELL. I felt HP support is better than dell and toshiba.
As per HDD, HP has been offering 5400RPM drives, not 7200RPM drives though.

Thanks a bunch, you all really helped out a bunch. Any other comments?
Here's a little question for those who have the xps 140... what's the remote like? thin, card style like that of the hp? or not? Does it happen to fit in the card slot on the left side like the hp's does? Any pics?
