Question:
inspiron 9300 video card overheat
i have an inspiron 9300 with the geforce 6800 go 256 mb
i'm not sure if it is just me or what
the card's idle temp is around 60 degree celcius, and when i'm playing doom 3, the temp will hit 87 degree celcius
i'm wondering if the other 9300 users are having the same temp reading, is it normal?

There is something wrong with that idle temp. I usually idle around 41C and top out at 65C. I would use some compressed air to clean out the vents and then see what your temps are.

I just recently had to have my 6800 replaced by Dell. Mine did the same thing as yours and then eventually died. I had used compressed air several times to clean out the heat sink but when the tech opened up the computer the heatsink was clogged up by dust. The tech told me the best way to prevent that is to use a vacuum. Alot of times the copressed air just dislodges the dust but doesn't get it out. The vacuum should remove the dust completly.

I usually just unscrew the vents and take out all the dust with my hands then I use compressed air

Your temps are a bit high. I live in a city where temps idle between 32-40 C, so my CPU and GPU temps are fairly high when not in air conditioning. CPU idles around high 40 (46-49) and GPU around high 50s (56-60) without ikfangui. When I play, GPU goes up to 78C but never above, the only time I've seen it go higher than that is with Oblivion (83C) and I have no overclocking. I would suggest you to buy a notebook cooler for your laptop. The one in Newegg seems to be the most recommended for our computers. The link escapes me at the moment but a simple search with Bytecc in newegg will yield the result.

Yes, real vacuum. I work my way around all the vents to make sure that I get everything that I can.

This also has to do with the battery recall.Check to see if you guys need a new battery,I entered my serial # at dell's website they said I need a new battery for my 9300.

the room temperature is around 22 degree celcius
my battery is not affected
i think it is probably dust clogging
it used to be idle at 50 and hitting peak at around 70 sth
i'll get a canister of compressed air tmr and try to get the dust out

can i reach the heat sink by taking out the keyboard on the laptop?

Nope, you have to open the top bezel too. You are basically taking off the whole top of the notebook.
