Alienware 5550 worth it?
I was considering buying an alienware 5550, but all of the horrible customer service threads has sort of caused me to doubt AW.

There are a lot of other 15.4" notebooks that compete with the m5550; perhaps complete the FAQ in the What should I Buy forum so we can recommend something.

I dont think the 5500 is worth it. For some reason its a laptop that was made to try and satisfy both the gamer, and the person interested in mobility. The graphics cards available in the 5500 will yes run the games you want to play (currently), but with 3dmark06 scores in the 2000 range... obviously there isn't much power to boot... mobility wise the laptop i believe ranges from 2-4 hours depending what youre doing.. which i guess is okay... but i think the medium for the two purposes is moot…and gamers should automatically upgrade to the 5750… and portable people go with the SENTIA

I've gotta disagree with you in one respect, Duke...the m5550 is a good solution for people who need a bit more mobility than a 17" offers. I game quite successfully on my m5500, and the m5550 will be even better. I do, however agree that the 17" models (AW and others) are better for the person looking primarily for strong gaming performance.

I played on Gun's 5550 and im not gonna lie, the games ran great..(CSS, QIII) but like i said, it lacks power for next gen games ... so whats the point of buying a laptop that barely puts out 2000 in 3dmark06 and won't run games coming out in 3-6 monthsif your a gamer? you might as well spring the extra $$ for a graphic card upgrade and be set for at least a year...

The point is - if you want a system that has some reasonable gaming power, and decent mobility...the m5550 makes sense. Also, if you want to use it on your lap, the smaller one is more comfortable for some. I agree with you - IF THIS IS YOUR PRIMARY GAMING MACHINE. For those of us with a good desktop, and for people who've never had a top end gaming machine, the m5550 is a good choice :p
I don't have time to spec out a comparable Asus vs Alienware, but I'm not so sure the pricing is all that different...

My review for the Alienware Area-51 m5550 is now posted in case you guys didn't already see it:
Coming off a Pentium M 1.86/2GB/256MB X700 OC'ed, I think it is a fantastic gaming machine. Remember that it only comes with a WXGA display (which you may or may not like; I do), and it can handle any game at that res, including FEAR and other high-end games.
If you want any other game benchmarks, let me know before the end of this week and I will get them done for you. All depends on if I have the game though.
