.dmg = install?!?!?

Question:
.dmg = install?!?!?
so thats how u install a program/app on OS X?!?!?! no uninstalling? just drop it in "trash" and ur done?!?! no registry to clean up? i thought there is some "preference registry" in OS X; does that uninstalled/deleted also? or do i have to remove it manually?
what do i have to do to uninstall a program (completely, as in no trace of it left...)?
if i install/uninstall a lot of program on a mac will it slow down the computer like it did on windows?
wow, if this is true mac rules! Welcome to modern computing. This is what today's OS's can do. Unfortunately Windows is not the most modern OS. Sorry, had to get a little dig in! But yes this is one of OS X's huge advantages.

Re: .dmg = install?!?!?
OS X does seem light years away ahead of MS. I have a question though and I know I could read up on it but I’d appreciate a simple abstract from someone in the know, rather than research.
How come MS so much more popular? OS X has no registry, almost no viruses and install/plug and play/uninstall are such a breeze one would think OS X would be much more popular.
It can’t be just because of games?
And what is the deal with latest games anyway, why don’t they make them for Apple. I am not talking about heavy graphic dependent gaming, just simple games like EA sports.
What is the down size of OS X if there is one and I don’t mean program compatibility?
Something doesn’t add up or the world is just stupid, because quite frankly my main reason for wanting a switch is not the macbook itself but rather OS X. If a thinkpad z61t had native OS X it would be a no-brainer purchase.

so where would the leftover usually be? do i need to clean them (to save space, improve performance, etc.)?

Something doesn’t add up or the world is just stupid, because quite frankly my main reason for wanting a switch is not the macbook itself but rather OS X. If a thinkpad z61t had native OS X it would be a no-brainer purchase. 1- OS X is a relatively new OS. Older MacOSs had their shortcomings.
2- OS X is only for Apple machines (even though I think it is totally legal to buy OS X and mod it to run in a beige x86 machine, no matter what Apple EULA says). Windows is available in a far wider range of computers.
3- Microsoft, marketing-wise, s very clever. They delivered what the market wanted, even when there were better options available (as in the early Mac days).
4- Monopoly. Never underestimate the power of the monopoly, specially in a central area like OSs. Imagine you build roads. Then, you also build cars to run in those roads - and only gas that you either manufacture or approve can be used in those cars. Also, all accessories like tyres, stereos, etc. Does it really matter, after a significant number of people use your roads, if someones builds a better one? how many people would be willing to exchange cars, find a new gas station (they would be rare), find a new stereo, if the road you already have is good enough?
Let's be accurate here. Windows is not the reason for registry issues, poorly written software that relies on the registry is. This is actually one of the focuses of .NET, as software written to the CLR has no registry dependencies whatsoever (in fact, it installs and uninstalls almost exactly like OSX programs). But a lot of times, this poorly written software comes from MS itself. And the concept of a registry in itself is something I can never imagine being good for the user - the only ones whou would like are software houses who can put in arcane copyright measures hidden deep inside it. Also, if you leave space for abuse, someone will abuse it, so no points for MS for inventing the registry in the first place, and a few demerits for letting it live so long.

Wooky, regarding a couple of your comments:
1) OSX came out at the end of 2001, as did Windows XP.
2) It's cool that you think that, but PC's are not 'optimised' for OSX, and it is illegal, so those who try it, it is a risk.
You are definately right about Microsoft's marketing and OS Monopoly. Apple has gained some marketshare with their move to Intel.
