Question:
are dothans compatible with the new Asus Core Duo laptops?
Okay, this is kind of a stupid and 2 fold question
1. Are the older dothan chips (400 fsb and 533 fsb) compatible with the new core duo notebooks? I know it won't go the other way around, but can I use an older chip? On paper they look to be the same as Celeron M's (but with speedstep) unless the Celeron's that are supported are somehow Yonah cores...
2. Is it possible to pinmod a dothan from 400 fsb to 533 fsb on the newer laptops, or is the pin layout different?
Poor student looking to build as cheap a laptop as he can now so he can upgrade to C2D later on if he ever needs it.

I was in the same situation as you, but I ended up finding a core solo from an intel mac mini pull. from what i was told, the dothan chips are not compatable, so you might need to find a core solo- or go the expensive route now (I might be upgrading soon so my 1.6 ghz t1200 might be for sale soon :D)

1. No. The new core duo cpus use a different socket than the dothans.
2. No. See above.
What is your budget?

I always figured they were both S479 and the same packaging...
I am looking to keep it under 1000 US. I can probably make a 14" (Z62F or something for that price), but I think they're kinda ugly.
I was hoping to score a Z35f for about 760 US, then tack on a processor ~ 100 and a HD for ~ 100 and some more ram

Re: are dothans compatible with the new Asus Core Duo laptops?
Interestingly, Intel has changed the socket configuration yet again. This could be due to the architectural changes changes that require you to use the newer 945 boards. While the pin count has remained the same, Intel has changed the pin layout, making it imperative that any notebook featuring Core Duo will be running on the all new 945 chipset. The socket will be based on a 479-pin layout, and as mentioned earlier, the pin arrangement has been changed, so obviously you can't put in newer processors in old sockets. Surprisingly though, the Core Duo processors have not migrated to the LGA775 kind of a pinless design. The Core Duo and Solo still have pins on them, which does seem to be a bit strange.
