inspiron 8100 not display
have a dell inspiron 8100, I have a black screen. I can see the desktop faintly in the background, therefore I know my video card is working Is there a way to check the lcd display to see if that is the problem, How do I find which lcd display I have on this laptop with =out contacting dell and paying them $ 50.00.

i'm unclear on why you want to know which lcd you have?
also unclear on why you would have to pay them 50? you should be able to pop your svc tag # into dell's svc/support site and get a rundown on your parts
however, i don't know how the above will help you trouble shoot your problem. instead, plug the notebook into an external monitor/lcd/tv/whatever to see if it will display (compsavy's suggestion), if it does, your gpu is ok and your lcd is the problem. if the gpu is ok, you can try popping open the notebook and reseating the connection for your lcd

sounds like the backlight might have gone out on your panel, wich as far as I know the only fix would be a replacement, or using the video out to another display
