Question:
7900GSX - Flashing the 7900gs with gtx bios
I havent seen this posted here yet, unless I'm blind, but I'm really surprised no one has put this up yet.
Check out this link to find out all the details:
A quick summary:
You can now flash the 7900gs with gtx bios's and get even better OC'ing results. I'm currently running the following:
9400 T2500@2.0ghz/2gb 533mhz DDR/17"WUXGA/120gb 5200rpm HD/ 7900GSX (GS flashed with GTX bios) clocked at 600mhzcore and 1600mhz ram!!!!
My 3dmark06 score is just shy of 5000 and this is with the single pipe 7900gs on a 90w psu. This has been ROCK SOLID, before if i even clocked the gs to 480 core I would get artifacting in ATITOOL now its perfect. I highly recommend checking it out!
BTW, im sure if I did a clean install of XP and stopped alot of the background processes I have running I would easily clear 5000 3dmark scores, but i'm satisfied for the moment!

i posted that link a few times, just not in this section
don't forget that dell will void the warranty if they find out you did that mod

Just remember the MOD is completely reversible....
... unless you fry your card in the process.. MUAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
But personally I have been running mine as a GSX clocked at 600/1600 for over 2 weeks now and I have had no problems at all. My max temps in NFS Carbon with EVERYTHING cranked up is 83c. My 3dMark scores are 9450 in '05 and 5500 in '06. Now that is without tuning my system at all first and my video set to quality.

Just an update for everyone. I installed the nvidia reference drivers and now Im getting even better results. Check out this pic:

83c is actually pretty high. make sure you watch the temp on both your cpu and gpu to make sure it doesn't fry on you.

Yea i notice it runs slightly warmer than usual, however most people I've discussed this with tend to think the card is fine as long as it runs < 95 degrees or so under full load, which is quite high, but apparently fine for this card. If something does happen though I guess thats what warranty is for :)

glad people noticed it

actually flashing the card will effectively void the warranty. especially if they discover you flashed it to run at speeds faster than it was originally set for.

I wonder how would they tell that you re-flashed the BIOS if the card gets fried. I doubt they will actually go into the trouble of taking the EEPROM chip off to see if they can read it and what firmware is actually on it.
Just flashed with 600/1600 (600/800) GTX BIOS. Performance improvements are very noticable and no artifacts! However the card seems to heat up to about 87-89C at full load. I will do some more extensive testing in a bit and if it goes over 90 I'm going to flash to a bios with lower settings.

Hey Leshii, after messing around with it some more I noticed that at full load i was getting around the same results temperature wise, and occasional spikes to 93degrees or so. I tried downclocking it to 550/700 but didnt seem to make a difference, I think the voltage is really what causes the heat issues. I've reflashed to my original 450/1150 gs bios for now until I have some time to test it more.
One thing I will be trying later as well is adding artic silver compound to the gpu and see if that lowers temps at all. Will also look into sourcing out a dual pipe heatsink, but they seem hard to come by.
