Question:
E1705 DVD RW +- TSSTCorp issue?
I don't know if anyone has this issue before. Dell replaced my E1705 because the old one had the heat issue. It had DVD writer from Phillip. This drive performed great.
The new one has the TSSTCorp DVD writer (what is this brand name? Samsung?) and it is **** slow. It takes more than 1 hour to write a DVD at 8X (11MB/s) and i eats up all my CPU resources. I use Sony DVD blank media. The mouse pointer is laggy and I cant even listen to the music with Windows Media Player. This never happened before with other DVD writer drives. Usually it took other drives about 15-20mins to finish a DVD. I use Nero burn and notice that the buffer level is changing all the time compared to other drives, which is stable at 95-99% all the time.
So, may I ask:
- Is this normal? Can I do anything about this? Can I ask Dell to replace for me? I have 3 yrs At-Home Night and Weekend service.
- Is this because of the firmware? My windows is very up-to-date. If it is, where can I download the firmware and upgrade it?
Thanks in advance.

Probably need to reinstall the drivers. You should be able to find these at support.dell.com . Also make sure your IDE is set to DMA mode and not PIO (device manager --> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers-->right click on primary IDE channel-->advance settings.

Try a different burning program; reinstall drivers, as the previous poster mention.
2 systems from Dell with TSST and no problem with either one of them when it comes to burning. Very decent drives.
Sorry, can't advise much. If you happen to have Dell's Windows XP running, wipe it clean and start fresh. They have lots of bloatware and whatnot that might potentially contribute to your problem.
Good luck.

Have you tried what Southern Girl suggested?

If it's set to DMA mode, then try this
http://support.dell.com/support/topi...BB7&l=en&s=gen
since that's what DELL's gonna ask you to do first before sending you a new drive.
