Question:
NC 8430 DVD ROM (GMA-4082N) problem's solution
Heya!
My problem was that DVD ROM(VENDOR:HL-DT-ST MODEL: DVDRAM GMA-4082N REVISION: HQ04) of brand new NC 8430 worked all the time in PIO mode (basically computer is unusable when DVD-ROM works), thus it was pain in the ass to write CD-R not talking about DVD-R. I read in several places that people had same problem with this or similar hardware. (Also on this forum). However only proposed solutions were either to get new hardware or to ask for refund.
But after playing around with BIOS and hardware controllers, i discovered that this issue is caused by Native SATA support. So here we go - solution lies here:
http://winhlp.com/tools/resetdma.vbs (Launch it, if you use Firefox then save it and launch it, restart pc)

Re: NC 8430 DVD ROM (GMA-4082N) problem's solution
This is very interesting. I haven't had any trouble burning DVDs and Cds but I am having a less than satisfactory DVD video experience. DMA as far as I'm aware is enabled, but as for this 'ultra dma' mode I'm not so sure. I'll read up some more on this issue.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Btw i recommend for NC 8430 users to apply Core Duo support for WinXP SP2, speeds up sys quite nicely

I had a similar problem with my NC8430. When on battery I had choppy playback of DVD. It would work fine on AC power. I did notice on my primary IDE channel that the device was set to PIO even though the DMA option was enabled. The VBS script fixed my problem completely.

Could you elaborate on your choppy DVD playback problem a bit more? My primary IDE channel was intially set to PIO, but I uninstalled it, restarted and Windows installed it again and now its in multi-word DMA mode 2, but I'm still getting poor quality playback. Is it necessary to do the VBS script to solve the problem?

you can try running the vbs script, however if it works in MWDMA2 now, it should be already ok.
Try putting power scheme from Laptop, to max performance (Workstation) and see what happens with DVD playback.
Are you running some applications that control your notebooks power schemes (for example Notebook Hardware Control). If yes then try disabling them, and if that doesnt help, try to do Drivespeed test and post results on web, i will do then on mine and will see....

I've tried changing the power scheme-no difference. And as far as I'm aware of there aren't any applications running controlling that either. And excuse my noobness but how do you get the VBS script to run? I've opened all the text stuff and saved the page but then what?

just save it as *.vbs and launch it, (if you use firefox then it wont save it automatically)
