Question:
HP User, Looking to Switch to Sony
Hi Everyone,
I recently purchased a dv2000t with Core 2 Duo from HP...I'm very unhappy with the laptop. I've had it for about 2 months now, and there are multiple problems (certain keys are not working, some USB ports are not aligned properly, Headphone Jack doesn't work, etc). I'm currently fighting with HP to get a full refund, which is difficult because I'm out of the 30-day return window.
With that said, if I can get the refund, I'm considering a VAIO, in $1500 - $2000 range. I would be using this computer for standard apps (Web, Music, Video, MS Office), as well as some more memony-intensive pieces of software related to work. These include some property management and revenue management pieces of software (Hotel Management Applications).
I'm thinking about the SZ. Any recommendations on this laptop, or any other models that may fit my needs. I want something portable (14 Inch Max), but nothing too small.
Please let me know you thoughts.

The Sony Vaio SZ will cost around $1800, so it is within your budget. You should also consider the Asus A8Js and W3J, as well as the Compal HGL30, if you are into serious gaming.

I'm exceedingly happy with my SZ360P, and I'm sure it would match up to the needs you listed.
The idea of filling out the FAQ is a good idea --- if you're interested in the SZ line in particular, I'd suggest taking a look at www.sonystyle.com and picking out a few of the actual model numbers that look interesting to you. There are a number of quirks associated with the particular model numbers, as you may or may not be aware ----- in any case, everyone over here will be more than willing to splurge the good and the bad, I can assure you. ;)

My last computer was an HP and thats what i was planning on getting for my next until i saw the quality of their newer products. Besides looking cheap, the felt cheap to. I decided to go with the SZ and am extemely happy. The SZ sounds like its just what you are looking for. My last laptop was a 17" so i was a little afraid the 13.3" was going to be way to small but now i cant even imagine anything else. Picture quality is awsome too

Same here, got a HP6000t (sold to my bro now). Looking at the SZ model, but scared the screen might be too small for me :(

You can get the SZ or the new C series. I think it is 13.3". also consider the FE, which is 15.4" but it is very light and thin.

Gritsak, I agree with what you said about the quality of the new HP Pavilion line. I think they actually look pretty nice, but once you get them in your hand you realize they're poorly built.
If I do get a sony, I'm leaning towards the SZ. Is there any news about new VAIO's coming out in the near future, or does it make sense to buy now?

If u need it NOW, buy it. If not, wait for VISTA in January. May be Sony will come out with SZ-48GP :p

Well, I have a Compaq V3000 which I'll assume has similar build quality to the HP DV2000s and its quite well built actually for the price, no complaints from me.
I myself have learned to be cautious of any company no matter what. I've had excellent experiences with Toshiba and poor experience with Fujitsu for instance when Fujitsu earns much more acclaim for its service and quality than Toshiba for instance.
