Question:
Direct x10
Does anyone know if a Dx 10 mobility video card card is in the works for the upgradable notebooks?
Answer:
Re: Direct x10
They are in the works, but I don't know when (maybe next spring) they will come out.
Most notebooks aren't upgradeable, and even so it will take a while for them to show up (as MXM or Axiom) modules. I think some Alienware's use MXM/Axiom so you never know.
But it might take some time. There are some huge power concerns for DX10 cards that nVidia and ATI are trying to overcome, especially for notebooks.
But everything I hear points to a late spring possibility for a 17"+ DX10 notebook.

Think I might beable to upgrade my SLI to dx10 when it comes out for notebooks?
Answer:
Re: Direct x10
Most likely not.
1. I don't think that the 9700 uses MXM although it is possible that Arima made the card upgradeable on a non-standard basis
2. The reason that the 9700 has 7900GS's is because I would assume having two GTX's in a 17" wouldn't work with heat and power (although who knows AW could have just wanted to sell mALX's so they didn't make the 9700 as good). If my original assumption is the case it is highly unlikely that it could handle two dx10 cards without needing a bigger power supply and better cooling.
Sorry, but planned obsolescence is a painful fact of the notebook industry (painful for us that is).

It is an mxm II I think.

Re: Direct x10
You're already looking at a 750w power supply for 8800s in a desktop setup, with all the accompanying cooling issues. The desktop 8600's won't hit until sometime in Q1 next year (although this is probably marketing rather than tech-induced). The DX10 cards are huge power-hungry beasts, and they put out a ton of heat, so getting one into a notebook is going to be difficult to impossible until they are able to get the heat/power requirements WAY down. Otherwise you'd be able to fry eggs on your laptop and it would have a power brick the size of a thin-and-light notebook.

I'm sorry brass mouse but 8800gtx's pull the same as x1900xtx's and thats there top of the line versions. Once they make a "go" version which will reduce power and heat it uses/creates and than on top of that it will be slowed down slightly and should be about the same as a GO 7900GS or a little more.

Re: Direct x10
I wouldn't count on that happening any time soon though, even if it is just a marketing thing to push the expensive desktop cards. Can you give us a picture regarding the mxm thing or a linky? thanks

People are too excited about DX10. Lets wait for the games to be released first... or better yet... the OS.
