Apple TV

Question:
Apple TV
Hey all
I have a few questions about this.
First, how does this system work?
Second, does it replace a router? And does it work for non-Mac laptops and PCs?
Also, post your thoughts here if you want :)
My Opinion: Seems cool, but I think its been done before. But we'll see :)

Re: Apple TV
I know for a fact it is for both PC and and Mac.
Ok here is what i understand so far, it may be wrong:
You can play videos and music on your TV from you PC (and vice versa). It can wirelessly update between you pc and tv. It has a harddrive that can store these things (50GB i believe). It can probably record TV too.

Re: Apple TV
We're not completely sure. Since it won't be released until Febuary. It will work with PC and Mac. And it does not replace your router.
The basic idea is that it sync it's media (the hard drive) with iTunes on one computer in the house. Any movies or what not that are setup to sync, will always be on the appletv. Then you can have up to 5 other units stream media to it.
It will only connect to an HDTV through component, DVI (I think) or HDMI. Apple.com has more information. But thats the basics of it.
And it has been done before, but not for Hi-def as far as I know. BTW, I think it only supports 720p.

BTW, 50gb hdd in my opinion is no where near large enough. That will only hold... about 5 hours of HD content.

Re: Apple TV
It's 40gb, so even worse :(
To me this just looks like a wireless video cable, enabling you to only use a cable for a short distance (ie, from the AppleTV) to the TV and use wireless from your computer to show things on your tv. Not exactly worth it imho.
If it had at least been a router as well as the other things, then it would have been interesting. Or a PVR.
That said, I definitely think there are people who will buy it, the market exists. I just won't be one of them until some future generation where it has more uses :)

Re: Apple TV
Also, as I understand it will only work with HDTV's which is ridiculous because it will be near impossible to get any HD content on the thing. This and the iPhone have me kind of scratching my head.

Re: Apple TV
Same opinion as me, cashmonee. I mean, if Apple's planning to allow videos to played on the iPhone as a signature feature of it, why only have 4 GB and 8 GB? How many videos can you fit in there? Compared to a 80GB iPod?
