Question:
AMD or Intel? Opinions greatly appreciated.
I am in the process of purchasing a new laptop for myself and I would just like to get a few opinions. A friend has about won me over on AMD but I still want to know what everyone else thinks.
Also how does the computer sound? If I decide to stick with AMD then I'm going to get this Compaq but if I go with Intel I'm going to get a Dell.

I'm soon to start college and I mainly just surf the web and do things to that sort. I am a big multi-tasker so I do want something that will keep up and be good a few years down the road. How does the sound? Any suggestions?

If you do run multiple programs at once you will be better off with an Intel Core Duo as they are designed for multi-tasking. However, I would really recommend that you go the the "What should I buy?" section of the forum and fill out the FAQ and you will be a able to get a better recommendation based on your answers. if you do not need dual-core, then Turion offers good performance at very good price. Most of the programs today are not multi-threaded, so they may not take advantage of Core-Duo, but you will still find it more responsive than P-M or Turion. IMHO, In Turion and P-M I felt Turion is is better for multi-tasking.

Also the Turion is 64-bit. So you will be able to run apps with 64-bit capabilities. You will see this more when Windows Vista is released. Though it will not be mainstream for a while. But since you multi-task I would check out the core duo. It is nice. :)

The vast majority of programs are written for 32 bit. Hopefully when Vista64 is released their will be more support than there is for XP64 which is very little. Personally I would opt for the Core Duo.

It's a tuff choice for me too.
The AMD systems seem to have weak GPUs. I'm holding off to May (or so) to see if a dual-core AMD chip comes out for Notebooks with a good GPU. Otherwise Intel.
