Question:
gateway build quality
in general, how do people find the quality of gateway laptops in terms of their construction, materials, and repair frequency?
i know several people who complain of shoddy parts and frequent dead gateways.....i'm just wondering if this is a general trend or what....

Re: gateway build quality
Well Gateway is kinda like Dell, they are a big manufacturer and sell laptops for pretty cheap.
Their build quality is about at Dell's quality, not really great, just average.
As for the DOA thing, I don't know, I have only had desktops. That has lasted my for 4 years so far, so I have no complaints. :)
Hope this helps. :)

Re: gateway build quality
I had the 8510 for 7 months and so far so good. Comparing with the emachine M5310 I had. I notice the build quality to be much better (in terms of the fan placements and heatsink location.) dispite that fact I won't say the build quality is top notch but average. There are laptop manufactures that specialize in build quality (IBM, Panisonic toughbook etc), but for the average user I would recommand gateway for the average build quality

Re: gateway build quality
basically, i need a solid notebook that won't suddenly just up and die on me right before a deadline for at least 18 months.....i guess my question is: will the typical gateway laptop be that dependable?

Re: gateway build quality
Well Gateway doesn't make laptops(like most brand names don't). Different models are sometimes made by different companies. I think the MX7525 is made by Arima...but I'm not sure who made my 8510GZ. I think my 8510 is a little more durable feeling than the 7525...but I don't thinkt he 7525's weak either.
In general...most brands are reliable...but can always have bad apples/models.
For this situation...you'd need to ask about a specific model. Just find something that fits your requirements, then when you decide on a specific machine...check out available reliability data for that machine. Any other info(like "I had a Dell and it sucked...all Dells suck!"...when not all Dells are made by the same company) is worthless.

Re: gateway build quality
Quanta-manufactured Gateway notebooks were very solid--the M405 was as solid as my Thinkpad (but weighed a good pound more).
Arima-manufactured Gateway notebooks had a series of problems that may now be completely fixed. (I'm thinking of the hinge problems on the M520, M68xx, and M74xx series).
Sorry, I'm not on top of their current offerings.

Re: gateway build quality
Ater using this Satellite, I conclude that either the Arima Gateways are above average build quality (aside from the previous hinge issue), or this Toshiba is just much below average.
Speaking of which, does anyone know who makes the newer Gateway laptops (NX550/560, NX850/860)? I really want to know but can never find an answer.

The NX850/860 are the same as the M680/8510 series. I'm not sure...but I've been told Quanta made my 8510...but I can't confirm that AT ALL. So don't take that as fact.
