Question:
Future
Justin, are there any Asus notebooks coming out in the future (Fall, winter) that will have 64 bit processing? Or a video card that is signicantly faster than the X1600? Basically I will only buy Asus and if nothing is coming in the fall/winter that has a different processor (64 bit) or significantly more powerful video card, then I will just get the W3J now instead of waiting that long.
Im assuming the only systems coming out before next feb. in NA are the V1J and the updated W3J ( just 1.8 ghz duo but no video card upgrades) and V6J.

Re: Future
Well, there will be, but what they are, no idea.
The 'refresh' rate is usually 4-6 months, so, yea, there WILL be, however, what it will actually be is unknown.

Re: Future
... there certainly will be. I can't talk about any of them as my "official" documentation only goes as far as 6 months and although I've heard about stuff going into next year, I can't comment on anything more than about 45 days away (unless someone else leaks information first)...
256mb x1600 is going to be hard to beat in those systems...... I'm still wondering how they're putting one in the W3j. I can say that the 256mb x1600 is splattered all over all the information I have going into next year..... nothing better. So as of now, I think I can safely say it's going to be unlikely to see a "better" card in any of their systems.... including something like the W2.....
Asus is going to focus on getting some lesser gaming cards into smaller systems (like the nvidia 7300 they're going to put in the 13" W7)..... This year's focus is certainly on pushing the smaller systems to that next level... the only thing is, is that the 256mb x1600 in the W3j IS that next level.

Re: Future
Intel promices the core dou to come out with a 64bit capability sometime in the 3rd quarter. Now the date means nothing but i do belive sometime this year you will see them. The problem most people face now is with ensembles. If you buy one now you cant upgrade the cpu without voiding the warranty. With whitebooks it is not like that but there are no barebones from asus out now except the z62f.

Yeah....... Q3....... I'm going to bank on Thankgiving time.... The Core Duo's were supposed to be out by Q4 last year..... look were we are now.
.... Now correct me if I'm wrong - but you'll let customers change out their cpu and keep their system under warranty? If so, think about that one a little harder... if you do, they can take out the cpu, do anything to it.. then when it doesn't work, it's on you. Are we on the same page or are you just saying that someone who could buy a barebone could make that swap... because you were talking about the warranties, so maybe i'm confused... Just curious.

Re: Future
No you and I are on the same page. We put the warranty void sticker on the cpu. The only way someone can mod the cpu with a new one is if they request it in writing. If the notebook ever comes back for rma we will request both cpu's be returned. Obviously pin modding overclocking and such things will void the warranty but upgrading the cpu to a better newer model we will allow as long as the customer requested permission. If no such request was eve made and the warranty seal i broken then there may be a problem although as long as we dont find anything fishy i cant say it voids the warranty.

Will the W3J be able to upgrade to 64 bit core duo? Im assuming it would be because its stupid for intel to come out with core duo and not even a year later come out with 64 bit core duo that isnt compatiable.
Thats my concern here. Like Justin said the X1600 will probably be the best video card on asus systems this year. So since theres no concern with video cards its just the processor that worries me.
I just realized something, would the 64 bit core duo only be placed in heavier asus systems (Not W3/V6) this fall/winter or would it be put into smaller systems?

Re: Future
I agree with jtom. What worries me the most is the 64 bit core duo being released in the fall. If you can swap it into a W3J then I would get one right now but if its not compatible I might have second thoughts.

Gotcha..... basically same thing here - to keep the system under warranty we'd like to make that upgrade - but by having a written request, you basically void the warranty on the cpu... not the system...... I understand that totally agree.
About the 64bit core duo... right now from what I've seen - the cpu would work but will likely need a bios update...... Some claim the current cpu IS 64bit and is crippled for some reason.... Till more information is available, don't think anyone can tell you for sure though.

who's been claiming the current duo is 64bit and crippled?
