Question:
Help - Asus S1300n
Hi everyone
I have an ASUS S1300N which I am experiencing some sewere problems with, leading me to believe that the motherboard is fried!
Here is what happened. I left it on (unsupervised) for about 10 hours and when I looked at the screen after this time there was a mix of green and inverted colors. I immediately turned off the notebook by holding the power button. When I try to boot the status leds flash and then nothing happens ... the fan does not run the HDD shows no activity and the screen is off!
I am sure that the ram (beyond the onboard) is fried and since I cannot see any activity, besides some leds flashing once, when I try to boot the notebook I assume that the motherboard is fried as well.
The notebook is almost three years old so I have no warranty left, therefore I am looking to figure out what is wrong and possibly repair it myself, before buying a new notebook or getting the S1300N fixed by an ASUS service center.
Does anyone have some advice on:
1. What might have caused the problem?
2. How to figure out exactly what is wrong?
3. Where to get the appropriate parts to fix it?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
S1300N specs:
Pentium M 1.3 GHz
640 MB ram (512 MB kingston PC2100 intalled and 128 MB onboard)
HDD 40 GB Hitachi travelstar 4200 rpm
Chipset intel 855GM
Graphics Intel 855GM - AGP

Try pressing down the hard reset button on the bottom of the laptop (requires a pin). Sometimes my M2n gets stuck so I remove my battery and do a hard reset, this usually gets it back up and running.

If you have two sticks of ram try and take out one at a time and boot it.

You could try to check the rgb connection between the screen and the system........ back then those cables weren't taped together (for that extra protection)... and I've seen them come apart.
With that said....... if it's the screen - you could test that by hooking up another one to the VGA output and booting.
All you need to boot into the bios is the cpu and some ram.... the internal onboard ram almost never goes bad, so take out your other stick and just try to boot off of that......... also take out the hard drive. From there, you should be able to get into the bios... if you can't, that motherboard may be screwed.

The thing that did it, was removing the ram and booting with only the onboard ram. However I only have 128 mb ram onboard, which means really bad performance. If I try to insert any ram in the ram socket I am back to square one (problem described at the beginning of the tread) .... Anyone known what could be wrong and how to fix it????

Its either 1 a bad ram chip. or two a bad **** slot which would mean you need to get the otherboard replaced or serviced. and pay 200-300.

Thanks for the reply!
I know for certain that it is not the ram, since I have tried different ram chips. It's gotta be the slot then (kinda suspected that already). Could it be possible for me to fix this myself, since getting the notebook repaired will probably cost more than buying an equivelant replacement :(
Alternatively, if a new motherboard is not too expensive I could probably try to change it myself ....
