Question:
How does the screen on the new V6j compare? I know it's no IPS, but...
I know the screen on the new V6j is not the same IPS screen that is on the current V6Va, but how does it copare to say the screen on the current W2 for example?
Looking for a system for Photoshop, torn between the Great IPS screen on the current V6Va, the current W2v, and the "j" versions of each. If the W2j were availble now I would probably just order that and be done with it. But the almost 7 pound Dell I'm carrying around now must go back to my soon to be former empolyer and I need a new machine by 3/20 - 3/25. Could get the V6Va, add the 2gb of memory and a 7200 rpm drive for the price of either W2 (even with the rebate on the current one), or do the same to the new V6j.
I'm not a gamer, Photoshop and other maybe Web development (html, xml type) applications will be the machines main use. Will almost always have browser open in the background.
But I keep hearing about that SCREEN!!!!
But I've never seen it, and probably never will unless I buy it.

One person posted that the V6J screen wasnt that great and had a very limited viewing angle. I have a W2 its good screen but could be brighter. the V6Va screen beats them all easily though really not a comparision looks more realistic and natural.

ThinkPad FlexView is an IPS screen like the V6va, but not glossy.

Does the screen make up for the performance difference between the V6 and W2 or "j" models? Or will I even notice a difference between what I have now? Because staying at the same level is fine, slowing down is not.
The machine I have to replace is a 2ghz Pentium M with 2gb memory and 256mb on an Nvidia Quadro FX Go1400 graphics card, wide screen not glossy(1680 * 1050 res). The hard drive is a Travelstar 5K100 80gb 5400 rpm drive. If I get the V6Va add the 2gb ram and the 7200 rpm how will the performance be compared to my current system? Or will I notice a difference with the Duos?

You say the screen on the new one is not great and your W2 could be brighter, but I'll be going from a matte finish Dell, so.......

The V6va's screen is one of the best screens you'll ever use..... until they come up with some sort of HD OLE screen or something... period.
The V6j's screen is better than the V6v's screen, but in my opinion, it's at the level of the W3v's screen..... you're going to have limited vertical viewing angles and some may call it slightly "worse", because the extra height will make those viewing angles slightly more noticable than on the W3's....
With that said, it's still a great unit and a lot of people are already picking them up........ the only problem is, anyone who bought a V6va and then sold it because they wanted a V6j will be seriously pissed off with the screen. Personally, I'd buy a V6va, then a V6j... swap the screens and sell the V6va with the normal color shine screen on ebay...... But, we can't have everything... although that is the closest to perfect idea I'd had for you guys....
Now, if you look a W2v..... end of story, there's a rebate ending on Friday.... that's the big reason to continue to look at that. However, if you're still deciding between V6 and W2... no matter current or future.... you're not near ready to settle on a system.

Justin, I know you'll probably blast me for this, but I'll ask it anyway.
I'll guess that either the W2 or V6j screen are much better than the Dell I'm working on now, correct? I have no idea who actually makes it for them, or who makes the ones on the Asus either for that matter. It is a 15.4 wide screen with the native res of 1680 * 1050 if that gives you any idea who OEM is for it.

Re: How does the screen on the new V6j compare? I know it's no IPS, but...
Every screen I've seen on an Asus in the last couple years have been very very good... I'd say at the worst, maybe the 2nd or 3rd best for their size, res and type.... let me give you an idea of what I mean.
W1n/Z70va - 15.4" WSXGA+ matte - best
L5ga/V6va - 15.1" SXGA+ IPS - best
W5a/ae - 12" WXGA glare - best
W3v - 14" WXGA glare - maybe... just maybe second best in terms of vertical viewing angle.
W2v - 17" WSXGA+ glate - second best only in brightness... but the only brighter panels I found were a low res....
Now.... Asus uses up to 3 different screen makers for all of these screens and 99.9% of the time I can't even tell the difference... so I'm not about to say who makes what because it varies shipment to shipment sometimes.... but I certainly can't tell you who makes a panel for someone else...... but Asus' 15.4" matte displays were mainly made by Phillips and Samsung... Phillips made the WXGA panels, while Samsung made the WSXGA+ panels.... There are many other places who make these, but for some reason I'd think we're on different levels to begin with becasue Samsung makes probably the best panels.... and there are a lot of "cheap" panel makers who make a lot of screens for.... lets just say... other companies.. But everything varies based on make and model and date of purchase I'm sure.
I would say, coming from what you're coming from... a Z70va screen would probably be a slight step above what you've got...... With that said, both a V6 and W2 screen are going to be nicer... the V6j might not give you the total viewing angles you'd expect.... but if you understand that, it's no reason to write it off. The V6va is like a sony flat trinitron crt graphics display.... just 1/4" thick.......
Make up your own mind from there...... I don't like when people get to the point you're at, then say... want me to pick one for them... Just in case they start to feel like they should have picked the other one... I don't want them to be able to look at me and blame me..... basically becasue if they regret it.... it's only because they wonder what the other one would be like..... it's sort of like buyers remorse... but with great products.... like the grass is always greener type of story...
... good luck.

Re: How does the screen on the new V6j compare? I know it's no IPS, but...
Justin do you ever game on the W3V because while limited viewing angles dont matter much for internet and office and stuff. I really cant see being able to game comfortably on them. Simply because darker colors in movies in games really bring out a screens viewing angle limitations making it much harder to see anything going on in the game. honestly get a V6Va lets make a comparison. V6Va has a much much better screen than a V6J. The v6va has a X700 from what i read will out perform the 7400 card in the v6j. so the only benifit you will get from the V6J is the dual core which will run apps faster. noticable but. the 1.8pentium m will run most things just fine anyways. so if you want a good screen and to game the V6Va is the much better pc. at least thats what i think.
