Question:
Asus W3V DVD burning problems...
I have an Asus W3V and it is a great laptop. The one issue I am however having is that I am having one hell of a time burning DVD-Rs. I consistently get discs that burn then show up in the drive as being blank (duds). I have tried a few brands and the only discs that give me consistent burns are Sony DVDRWs.
I tried Imation Discs (these were really poor and even did not work on my brothers desktop drive), Datawrite (a mixed bag but still quite a few duds, and some from ridisc which out of the 4 I have tried have all given me complete coasters. I have also tried lowering the drive burning speed which does not seem to help.
Can anyone help? Has anyone had a similar problem (or not)?

Send it in, replace w/ warranty.
Or try different program for burning. Also make sure you're not running tons of programs while burning DVD's.

solution: upgrade firmware or stop buying cheap, crappy dvds

... or stop buying cheap, crappy dvds
Wow that came out in a real nice positive manner.
DVD quality matters, but it shouldn't render it completely dead. They would get lawsuits ASAP. I use "cheap, crappy DVD's" and they're fine. Never had one not work yet.
Firmware is good advice though.

Re: Asus W3V DVD burning problems...
I think Undertow might have the right idea. Sometimes different DVD media work while others don't, though theoretically the drive in the W3V should handle all of them. So often double layer won't work but DVD+R will. But media finickiness is nothing new -- my old CD-RW drive still to this day won't take certain companies' CD-R media while other brands work fine.

Thanks guys.
Is firmware upgrading risky? Are there any recommended dvd brands?

I've never had a firmware upgrade go bad. You'll be fine doing it in windows.

Re: Asus W3V DVD burning problems...
Hold on. But using Winflash to update my firmware will only update the BIOS not the actual DVD drive firmware. Is this right?
If so how will that help me with burning DVDs?

Have you tried the DVD+Rs?
Nope I have not given them a try. Mainly because the are incompatable with some of the other drives I use (it only seems to accept -Rs), so my other PC is unable to read information from them.
