Question:
Aspire 5672 questions - DVD player and OSD
Got two quick questions for any 5672 owner who hasn't reformatted:
1. When you use the volume control keys (either Fn+F7/Fn+arrow keys or the dedicated VOL-/VOL+ keys), is there any sort of on screen display that indicates the volume is changing?
2. Did the system come with a DVD player? If so, which program is it?

1. Yes, there is an OSD for volume.
2. Yes, Acer Arcade plays DVDs. Surprisingly well I might add.

It's some Acer-program that loads with "Empowering Technology". I don't remember the exact name.If you have empowering technology loaded up,the OSD should work - at least I think it should.

The program is LaunchManager (not to be mistakenfor LAN manager or Acer's eManager)
It requires the .NET framework to be installed (not sure which version actually, 1.1 or 2)
It should be on your system CD or otherwise in the drivers directory of your notebook series at ftp://ftp.acer-euro.com/notebook

I guess Liar has reformatted his HD and put on a fresh install, during or after which you have to find out which of the drivers/utitlities you actually need to get the functionality you want. LM and Arcade are Acer things not standard MS things.
I am afrad for Liar he may have lost Arcade since I don't think Acer provides this otherwise than pre-installed.
But maybe the P2P networks can help out

Yeah, but why not just uninstall the Acer progs that you don't want rather than doing a complete install of Windows? If it's because of FAT vs NTFS, that's simply taken care of by a prog like Partition Magic. Uninstall Arcade, install WinDVD, uninstall NTI, install Nero. Furthermore, you can resize the partitions so that ACERDATA (D) has, say, 90GB for user data, and ACER (C) has about 25GB. Why reformat?

I like your down to earth opinion
My personal (thus potentially offending) view is "peer pressure". Just because one of their mates does it, they want to keep up in the bragging game.
It won't make much of a difference (compared to selectively uninstalling/reinstalling applications) in terms of speed/performance etc..
But it could leave you with a smaller 'footprint' on the harddrive.
I eventually did it because the facory install wasn't optimal (both Bluetooth and DVD RAM had a few problems) something which I couldn't see to fix otherwise.
But in most cases there may be no 'business' need for it at all. For gamers it may be slightly different, since games seem to capable of messing up just about everything, but even there it's probably more a fad than anything else.

Thanks all, especially Drio. I'll try the Launch Manager. And Drio's exactly right about why I asked: I reformatted and now I want to restore some of the lost functionality.
As for why I reformatted, Talon_Sr, there are several reasons:
-I needed XP Pro instead of Home (got the x1600 version, so Pro wasn't an available option)
-I don't have PartitionMagic, but I still wanted to get rid of the recovery partitions and make my own NTFS ones.
-I reformat every system I get so that 1) I'll know exactly what's on my system and 2) I'll know whether the manufacturer's drivers are reliable enough in the event of a future hard drive failure.
Drio: Interesting theory about peer pressure, but that's not why I'm doing it :) Reformatting isn't really hard, anyway, it's just time-consuming.
