I've just noticed the bottom part of my screen gets really warm, from the dell logo up about an inch or two, then it gets cool to the touch, my desktop lcd stays cool over the entire screen, is this normal?

I think it is normal on the larger screens. Mine is usually very warm. If you remove the bezel, you'll see all of the LCD wiring and parts right under the dell logo.

l just touched the same spot on my e1405 and its also pretty hot.

it's hot because there is a "lightbulb" there powering your LCD.

okay, how come that doesnt happen on my desktop lcd?, or on my old compaq evo laptop?

the older LCDS dont generate that much heat as these do and its normal anyways and plus each laptop has a different LCD manfacturer all laptops are designed differently mostly all of dells LCDS are the same design from 2003 and ^
