ATI 9700 128MB vs x600 64MB

Question:
ATI 9700 128MB vs x600 64MB
What would be better for gameing on a laptop?
Thanks Much
Answer: The x600 will no doubt win. It's the better, more powerful GPU. Games rely on the speed of the GPU and less of the amount of memory the GPU has available. Increasing video memory may help a bit, but the performance difference you get just by going to a more powerful GPU will be major. One major issue is that you cen't really get any real world performance tests between the 2 mobile GPU's. The x600 series are not available in the market yet, maybe another few months or so. You can try comparing desktop models, but that's not the same.

Answer:
That is not correct..the mobility x600 is out in ONE notebook as of right now...the Acer aspire 1800 series...I actually just receieved one of these units, and did benchmarking....3dmark03 score of approx 3200-3300. The X600 IS the same GPU as the MR9700 except its on the PCI-E bus instead of AGP, so they changed the name. The defaut clock speed and memory speed of the GPU is just SLIGHTLY higher than most MR9700 notebooks which is why the 3dmark score may be a LITTLE higher than comparable 9700 notebooks......
If we see a PCI-E version of the MR9800 than THAT would be the NEWER GPU Archetecture, etc...
Answer: Hmm so if it came down to the two machine I am currently looking into. The 1800 or Ferrari 3200 they both should be about the same for gaming long term? Go for the cheaper one?
Thanks Much for the Info!
Answer:
Well it will really come down to battery life and size.....the ferrari 3200 is lighter, smaller, and will have better battery life.
But personally i dont like the screen quality on the the ferrari......If you go with the 1800 you get a 17 inch bright WXGA screen (1440x900 resolution)
Answer: I knew that the Acer 1800 had the new X600 GPU, but I wasn't aware that it was already shipping. I stand corrected. So overall, the X600 would still beat the 9700 GPU's even though they're the same GPU(clocked higher).
It mainly comes down to the unit that best fits your needs. If you're looking for a notebook that can travel, a smaller lighter unit would be ideal, but if it's just gonna be sitting on the table, then it doesn't really matter. If you're limited in funds, go with the unit that you can afford, since they're generally similarly spec'd (GPU wise).
