How do you determine start up time?

Question:
How do you determine start up time?
When I first got the sager, it took 40 seconds to start up completely from the second I pushed the power button. Now that I added all of my programs and stuff to it, it takes about 70. A huge difference.
Do you determine start up time from the moment the power button is pushed? How long should start up time be with a computer like mine?

from the moment the button is pressed to the time the hard drive quiets down. that does seem a little slow, try spybot s and d

Or go into Run.. and type msconfig. Make sure 'Process System.INI File' and 'Process Win.INI File' are unselected. You can edit which programs to launch in the Services and Startup tabs. I went from loading 86 programs on my laptop to 30. Makes a big difference.

Yeah so it's still starting up at 58 seconds. What's a good start up time anyway?
I re-ran my benchmarks and super pi to see if those scored where low, and I got about the same things.
4660 in 3dmark06 and 8389 in 05.
for 2m in super pi it took 1 min 44 seconds.
Everything else seems in working condition. I don't get it.

Re: How do you determine start up time?
A good start up time is however long it takes for your machine to load the stuff it needs to load. :)
As you stated, your 3dmark and super pi scores have barely changed. Meaning that your performance is not suffering from the extra stuff you loaded.
In other words; Why worry about it?

To make Windows XP faster (especially boot time):
You need to change the Prefetch option in the Registry.
Click Start then run and type regedit

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM

Current control set > Control > Session Manager

Memory Management > Prefetch Parameters.

Right click and select "modify".

Then change the value in EnablePrefetcher from 3 to 5.

Reboot and watch the faster speed.

Take a look at our tune-up guide:

Should help squeeze more speed out of your notebook.

Chaz, I actually did the tune up guide. THanks though. Only thing I didn't do was the bootvis. I'll do that now.
Gophn, after that fix, the restart was actually slower.. Now it's taking well over a minute.

now its taking like 60 seconds again. The hold up isn't starting my programs, it's just starting windows. It takes a while to see my desktop, then it's like 5 seconds or less to load after that.

Are you logging onto a network?
At work my laptop is way longer to load than at home...
