It is free to play online but you need to purchase the game first and no you do not need to play it through gamespy. The game can generate it's own server list.

Re: Battlefield 2
Yeah, I hate gamespy as well. I never used it for any game - never even saw the point? The in-game BF2 browser is fine, typically almost a thousand games going on at any one time if you're patched up to 1.41...

Re: Battlefield 2
I hate Gamespy, when I tried to un-install it, it almost nuked my entire games folder!!! Bastards, I had to do reinstalls of several games.
Basically it tried to take down all my games with it.
Once you buy BF2 it is free to play, it had its own in-game server browser and there are always thousands of servers and players online.

Re: Battlefield 2
I just keep gamespy installed for the patch upgrade stuff. I play exclusively from the server list though. It's really inconvenient having to click on a game in gamespy and waiting for Battlefield 2 to load, then finding its full and trying it all over again.

I'm fairly new to BF2, just bought it...can someone help me get started playing this online? I cant seem to download any patches or whatsoever. I bought the Deluxe edition, BF2 and BF2 special forces...
What do I click to get into BF2's own in-game servers?
