Question:
Domain names - what's the deal?
Hello
Please help out a newbie.
I haven some doubts about registering a domain name. I have a free web page. Let's call it www.freewebs.com/mysite
If you go to a registering company like register.com or godaddy.com, and register a domain name say myname.com, how do I make sure that when people enter www.myname.com in their browser, it takes them to www.freewebs.com/mysite?
When registering, do I just enter my free web site name like www.freewebsw.com/mysite?
Can you explain this to me?
Thanks in advance
Answer:
You need to register the root, domainname.com. You can set up a redirect, no problem. The setup will vary a bit based on the serving environment.

Thanks Brian.
Lets say I try to register www.myname.com Now, what info do I need to register? Apart from the asddress of my web site, will i need something called a DNS? Is that a must or not necessary
Can't i just register www.myname.com and say forward to www.freewebs.com/mysite?
Thanks
Answer:
Yes, you can forward the main domain to a directory of another domain, though I'm not sure it makes sense to do so. Why even obtain a sepereate domain in the first place?
