Forcing drivers for MR x1900...?

Question:
Forcing drivers for MR x1900...?
Hello everyone :)
I got my Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Xi 1554 a couple of days ago, and overall I'm very happy with it- except one extremely annoying problem, and I know from reading through some related posts on these forums- and other sites- that I'm not the only one.
My problem is the x1900, and the drivers for it. As there are no officially released drivers, I need to force some other ones to work with it, it would appear. Thing is, I don't know *how*. I did find a guide somewhere, for the same laptop, but it was intended for the WinXp drivers, whilst I'm running Windows Vista. I tried the method anyway, with the best equivalent of the instructions I could work out, but it failed- the method said an error should appear saying I didn't have the right hardware, but it didn't- the installer finished normally, but apparently didn't actually install the drivers despite that :\ (and yes, after that I did modify the .inf file as instructed and attempted to install from that, but no joy. I also have tried restarting, just in case, but again that didn't help at all)
So does anyone know how to force the drivers, under Vista, to the latest ones? The stock ones shipped with it by FS are dated at November '06, and don't even have OpenGL support, which is no small problem...
Big thanks in advance to anyone who can help me get this problem fixed.

Thanks for the assurance that it can be done... but that link seems to be broken- "page not found".
EDIT: OK, found it, because as it turns out this is the guide that I refer to in my first post- http://www.driverheaven.net/driverhe...ity-x1900.html. Problem is, that guide's for XP, and I already tried following it as closely as possible, resulting still in failure.

Re: Forcing drivers for MR x1900...?
sorry my bad its the wrong one there is another link i cant remember it.. but heres what you have to do..you will have new drivers but old catalyst (but will be able to play opengl supported games :))
its pretty much the same thing as that guide
1. uninstall the other driver
2.download the vista version of the lastest ati catalyst suite(download the radeon one not mobility).
extract but dont run the program...
3. download the dh mod tool and run it(go mobile) for the vista version
4.then open up the .inf file in notepad shuold be something like CX_41238.inf (inside you will know as it will have stuff like
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON" = ati2mtag_M6, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C59
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON" = ati2mtag_M6, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C5A
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500" = ati2mtag_M7, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C57
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7800 GL" = ati2mtag_M7, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C58
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000" = ati2mtag_M9, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C66
"ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000" = ati2mtag_M9, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_4C65
etc )
on that particular section add this line at the end
"ATI Mobility Radeon X1900" = ati2mtag_M58, PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_7284
5.save file
- Right click on the desktop and open your display properties
- Go to Settings tab
- Click on Advanced
- Find your card properties (where you can see some informations about your card and list all the compatible display resolutions)
- Click the Properties button - Go on Driver tab
- Click on Update driver
- Windows ask if you want to check updates with windows update for your driver, choose "Not this time"
- Click Next
- Choose "Install from a specified location"
- Next
- Choose "Do not search. I will choose myself"
- Click on Disk
- Click on Browse
- Select the inf file that you modified just before :
- OK
- If all is fine, you should now see, with "Only show compatible hardware" checked, "ATI Mobility Radeon X1900 "
- Click on Next and follow the procedure until Windows ask you to reboot.
- Reboot when asked
and there you go :)

Re: Forcing drivers for MR x1900...?
Success :) Thanks a lot, that seems to have worked great. The steps after modifying the .inf file seem to be for Windows XP (or maybe a differently set up Vista) but it was hardly a big problem to work out the equivalent :)
Thanks a whole bundle again :D
