IP address

Question:
IP address
everytime when i transfer files(download/upload) off the net, my rounter break down, I am sure it's my rounter, becase when I plug my notebook directly to the modem , everything works fine. seems like my router is locking my ip adress?!
Answer: Sorry, there really isn't enough info here to be able to give much helpful advice. If everything works fine when directly connected, but "breaks" using the router then you are right that it sounds like the problem is related to the router. I assume you mean it works until you start doing a big transfer and then it stops working. That would be a very usual occurance and two thoughts come to mind - packet size configurations and faulty unit. It is very unusual to change some of the super duper technical stuff on the router, but if you got that router from someone else, it is possible the messed with that stuff. Or you might have accidentally made a change while trying to set it up. Anyway, if it has a reset button or any way to revert all the settings to the factory default, then try that. Lacking that, the next most likely cause is a bad router. First see if you can upgrade the firmware and try that. If it still isn't working, I'd suggest taking it back to the store and exchanging it. Just to be safe, I'd recommend going with a different model and I'd suggest you choose one from one of the more common manufacturers (ie. Linksys or Netgear) just to increase your chances.
Answer: The router I am using is Linksys, I have exchanged a new one because of that issue. And I also tried the reset button. It works only after I reset everything (unplug and plug in the router), but whenever I start transfer (download/upload) the router break down again....
Is there any setting that I can do with my computer or the router to get this work??
Thanks jchastain
Answer: Hmmmmm. That is a very strange problem. I think additional details would be helpful in this case.
What kind of modem do you have? DSL? Cable modem? And confirm for us please that when you connect it directly to your PC that you are using an ethernet cable (and not a USB cable).
What exact model Linksys router are you using?
And what specifically is the behavior you are seeing? When you first hook it up, are you able to surf? Does it not break down until you start downloading a large file (meaning can you sontinue to surf without a problem if you don't try to download a file)? When you say "break" what exactly happens? What type of error to you get?
Answer: I am using DSL, and I am using ethernet cable to connect to my router, router is Linksys EtherFast BEFSR41.
4 computers are conneted to the router and router to the modem.
Whenever I start download/upload large files, then my internet suddenly down(can't surf the net), then I have to reset my router, then can surf the net. But when I start dl/up files, it becomes down agian.
Everything works fine (can surf the net, download and upload large files), ONLY when I plug in my computer directly to the modem(without router). So, I assume it's my router problem. Or my router setup, since it works fine till when I dl/up large files.
And I exchange a new router same model two times already, because of that issue.
Answer: You've done all the things you're supposed to. I have heard of occasional firmware problems and I suppose you have found some freak bug. I'd suggest just swapping that router out for a Netgear brand if you can and see if it works any better for you. If you absolutely want/need to stay with the Linksys, I'd try upgrading/downgrading the firmware.
Answer: have you tried setting up as a static network. You can use the router to assign the same ip address to each machine everytime it connects. You must then set up these assigned ip address's on each machine. In this scenario the default gateway becomes the IP address of the router.
Answer: one other point do you have this problem with all machines on the network , or just the laptop. What is status of firewalls on your computers, For example are you using Norton or other program to set a personal firewall?
Answer: It happens to 4 of my computer.
I couldn't get an ip address for my computer after the router is down.
I tried to turn off the firewall, but it doesn't help.
