I too am looking forward to the new 'ultra-free' version, though I doubt it will end up replacing my standard installation. I also hope to become more involved earlier on this time around.

Looking forward to it becoming more free. There will be a more free version from my understanding, but still ship a fully working one that will include the nvidia drivers, Intel 3945 drivers, etc. as well, which will be the primary distro. Basically, they'll mirror Debian development.
That being said, I just upgraded my desktop from 6.10 to 7.04 remotely (I'm in Phoenix, heading to Denver tonight), so I'm looking forward to trying it out tonight, seeing if it broke my Doom3 install ;) And I'm running 7.04 X86_64 on my personal laptop, which is also a kick in the pants with all the multimedia and Fn buttons and such working, and a brand new Logitech G5 supposed to be delivered sometime during the day today ;)

Yeah, same here Lysander and ftw. And I half-expected someone to say composite-by-default...but Pita still hasn't said anything, so maybe that's his kind of thing. Shuttleworth's release announcement is filled with cheesy (but funny) primate allusions, and he calls default composite "the monkey on [his] back."

Naah. Compiz isn't easily configurable from my experience, and Beryl isn't stable, not to mention both of them take up GPU time and battery life. As it is, Compiz is easily installable, as is Beryl, and I like it that way. If you want it, you can add it, but you don't have to have it, and it's not on by default to annoy or confuse new users.

This is exactly my take on it. Even if it had the option to be turned off, default composite would mean extra MB of space taken up for people who don't use it, like myself.

Compiz is already included in Feisty by default, it's just not activated. Desktop Effects is actually Compiz. Or did they take this out for the final release?

I hope for them to integrate SynCE to easily work with WM5 Mobile smartphones and PPCs.
I have tried so many ways and times to get it to work on Ubuntu. I haven't succeeded yet.
And also detection of Web-cams.
