GNOME-guy gonna test KDE

Question:
GNOME-guy gonna test KDE
ok, so I figure since Feisty was just released, and I'm gonna do a clean install anyway, I might as well give Kubuntu a serious go. There are a lot of programs in KDE that I think will suit me better than the equivalent GTK app.
Anyway, we'll see how things go.

Good luck. The last time I used Kubuntu I was not so impressed. Particularly with drive management and package management (adept). However, as I said then, I really don't have a problem with KDE; I am able to use KDE well in several other distros. For some reason, though, it just doesn't feel right in Ubuntu.

gnarly... so apparently something is totally screwed with the mic-in jack on my laptop...
when I booted, I was greeted with howling feedback... I plugged my headphones in and at least it was then only coming through them... but what's even more fun is that I can use my headphones as a microphone now...

well, I shut down ALSA for the mean time...
it's really weird, though... 'cause sound worked perfectly fine using the LiveCD.
I have the Ubuntu torrent going, but I would like to get this going properly. I'll see what else I can find for information.

a-ha!
well, turns out the problem was with my old .asoundrc file in my home directory.
I think I'm gonna trash most of my old config files and start fresh where possible...
ok, so this WASN'T Feisty's fault... it was me... :eek2:
progress is being made. I do like a fair bit of stuff about KDE, the mouseover effects on buttons are nice but subtle, among other things.

Some people think that KDE is too cartoony. I think they need to relax a little. :p

Re: GNOME-guy gonna test KDE
ugh... I've got my ubuntu torrent going.
there are too many problems, there are tons of bugs, and the "easy codec install" ain't so easy. it crashes amarok, and just doesn't do anything in Kaffeine.
there are other things that I don't really like, either, but anyway. back to a fresh gnome install I go.

If you really want to use a good KDE distro, get something like openSUSE, or even better, PC-BSD (which isn't really Linux, but yeah...). They seemed to be much more tailored to the KDE environment, whereas Ubuntu was always built for Gnome and then just put over to the others for speed/happiness.

Re: GNOME-guy gonna test KDE
PCLinuxOS is a good one to use for a KDE centric distro. It's generally said that whilst Ubuntu is a good representation of a Gnome distro, Kubuntu is a not so good KDE one.
I usually set up my system in Gnome, then install and run kubuntu-desktop. Saves me a lot of hassle.
