Getting Internet for my daughter's laptop

Question:
Getting Internet for my daughter's laptop
Can anyone assist me? My daughter is going away to work in a remote area in Canada - she is bringing her laptop with her. I would like her to have internet access so we can communicate by MSN. We have a remote router? now in the house, so she can use her laptop anywhere in the house (wireless) and at university. But how can she use it when she is in that remote community? I've heard of internet "cards" or even using a cell phone? But I'm very green with all of this and can't seem to find information on google that I understand.
This is the first time I've ever used a forum...

Re: Getting Internet for my daughter's laptop
If she is in a bigger city she should be able to find wireless hot spots. They are mostly in caffee shops/aiports/ uni campuses and places like that. There she can connect with her wireless. Sometimes it is free but some they ask you to pay. This would be the easiest and shouldnt be too hard to find in urban areas.
If she has a telephone line (land line) she could also use modem but that is mostly expensive. Cellphones can work too but its a bit harder to setup and you need a model that works. If she uses a US cell phone in Canada I would imagin it to cost alot too.

Check to see if a cell phone company that services her area offers mobile broadband.

try contacting them
or else if the there is a an unlimited data package in the cell service or mobile plan

Re: Getting Internet for my daughter's laptop
no no no dont tell ur daughter to connect thru any cell phone access. Especially with her cellphone. For one, its 56k baud or slower and its crazy expensive as she may be charged per kilobite surfed. She may be faced with a $300-$500 cell phone bill just for data.
Cell phone companies will offer higher speeds EVDO but its still very expensive compared to other options.
If shes in a remote area and if her work doesnt have net availability then her most likely best option is Rogers Portable Internet.
She just buys a portable modem and she gets high speed on her laptop anywhere. She doenst need to look for any designated hotspots and all she needs is just a power outlet.
