Question:
M1710 7900GS major problems - with pics
2 Attachment(s)
I spent over 2 1/2 hours on the phone with dell technical support and they couldn't remedy my video card situation. I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem and what they did about it.
My problems:
1.While surfing the internet I get the blue screen of death but only very pixelated.
2. While playing HL2 the screen is very pixelated in two of the many resolutions.
3. While in the NVIDIA control panel my screen goes crazy.
Downloaded all the drivers you can think of, so I am definitly updated.
Troubleshot with dell to no extent with nothing to show for.
So now I'm at the point where I'm gonna send it back and get the 7950GTX video card in hopes that it doesn't replicate, provided I don't get the usual help here in this fine forum.
Thoughts please.

could be hardware failure (video card).
also, if your overclocking it, that could be the problem too. I would go back to factory settings and not overclocking it if you are.

Laptop arrived a few days ago, didn't overclock. Don't know how. I tried to explain that it was the video card and he kept saying that it wasn't.

Well, you can't expect much from them,
Did you touch the laptop ? How hot it was ?
I guess it might be a spot of bother with the v-ram.

Looks very much like a hardware problem. You could try a clean install of windows.
Use the drivers that dell provides for you on their homepage. If they dont work then Dell has to accept that its not a driver problem.

That's definitely a hardware problem - my friend went through 2 GPUs 6800>7800>7900 with each time Dell giving him a better GPU. Each one was died from being overheated. He's partially to blame for one of them because he had OC'd it. But the result was the same - pixelated BOSD, half a screen showing, total darkness etc

If you just received this laptop then you should ask for an exchange. Try calling Dell again - a different rep may be able to do something for you.

do you have any temp monitoring software installed to see if its overheating?

Well nVidia's control panel can measure temperatures. Or else try Rivatuner or Notebook Hardware Control. Maybe Mobmeter will also work?

Could it be a virus? I also agree on some other people, it must be a hardware failure (Reference to video card). You should be eligible to get a replacement.
