Question:
Gma 950
My brother has a Gateway MT6825b laptop. He isn't really that interested in games and he'll mostly use the laptop for net surfing and watching dvd's etc. However I want to get him into some LAN gaming whenever he is home and the best game in my opinion for this is Call of Duty 2. However the main drawback of his laptop is the GMA 950...will it handle a game like CoD2?
Thanks for help.

Re: Gma 950
yeah, just run COD2 under Dx7 mode, then you will expect very smooth game play.

No, that is incorrect, Call of Duty 2 will not work on the GMA950 period. Sorry.

Re: Gma 950
The GMA 950 is a crap card for gaming, and anything less than about 3-4 years old is not going to work without heavy modifications to the game (as if modifications like that exist)...and even then it probably will give you trouble.
It would handle something like Wow, where the graphics scale very well with GPU abilities, but nothing like CoD2 would work. I'd say something like FarCry or simpler...I think Halo (the original) would work on low settings.

Re: Gma 950
Stuff like Far Cry works, but is buggy and mostly unplayable, Call of Duty 2, not just unplayable, it physically will not start, crashing on startup with error messages.

Re: Gma 950
Forget about trying to even run the latest top end notch 3D games on GMA 950. It has compatibility problems with some games to begin with, and lack of Hardware T&L makes it an undesirable card for gamers.

I had no luck playing vampire the masquerade with a core duo and intel 950
Even games you think it can play it really cant. It goes from normal to slide show back to normal all the time. Too disruptive for a real time game even a really old one like um.... morrowind.
You want a turn based game or a non 3d game like starcraft. Youre talking more like 6-8 years ago when 3d cards were still new
warcraft 3 is about the most exciting thing you can roll with it was about the last 2d game

From Intel's Site...
Call of Duty* 2 game is not playable. The game installs successfully, but when launched, it crashes with one of the following error messages:
- DirectX* encountered an unrecoverable error
- Does not support alpha blending
- No valid rendering code path detected
Intel is not aware of a fix or workaround for this issue. Contact the game manufacturer for further updates, patches or support.

Re: Gma 950
Halo will run perfectly. My sisters computer had to be used one night for a LAN party, and we doubted it would work but sure enough IT DID!!!! We had High Res, and Medium-Low Graphics. CoD 1, and CoD:UO worked fine, but CoD crashed and gave us the same error as the previous poster put. Which is intels way of saying "sorry we suck at making graphics cards, we made the game do this so we would feel better". But anything that is older than like... 3 years will run fine. I know Half Life 2 will run, but not half life 2 Death match. So it will be a game of trial and error. But if you need more specific games you need to know about, just post the titles, and we will help you out, to the best of our abilities.
