Question:
Battlefield 2142 on 7900 GS
I can't remember if I read correctly but I remember reading that with a 7900 GS, Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz, 2 GHz DDR2 553, I should be able to run Battlefield 2142 at max settings without a hitch? (My laptop is in my sig)
Well I just got the laptop yesterday and there are many times when my fps would drop below 10 (well I felt the lag but had no fraps or any framerate program running) but only when an orbitial strike lands right where I'm standing. Otherwise it's fine.
Another noob question: On max settings, which game is more graphics intensive? Oblivion or BF2142.

Oblivion is an extremely hard game to handle. It is poorly coded and not optimized for PC. You can run it fine though, looking at your system.
What settings and resolution are you using in BF2142? If you are running at a high resolution, then that is probably why you are getting low FPS when an orbital strike hits - all the particles, smoke, debris are hard for the video card to render in such great quantities. I don't know what the exact options are on BF2142 because I do not own the game, but look for settings that deal with particle detail and special effects. Turning them down one notch would be beneficial to your FPS.

I also have the 7900gs. I can run BF2 maxed out with no problem, but I run 2142 at medium-high settings. they cut the fat as far as system performance is concerned, but the graphics engine was ramped up a little between BF2 and 2142 so it takes a little more graphics power run maxed out.

Well there's your problem. :) 1024x768 should work with everything maxed.
