Re: guild wars
On your laptop it should play great, I had a 3.4 GHz (single core), 1 gig and x800 xl and played on max no slow down.
I'd suggest you get the first one the original, can't remember the campaign name there's actually only 3 campaigns and one expansion (which is coming out next month). If not then get the latest one Nightfall as they're all independant of each other.
Whichever of the free you get look me up I go under the name Black The Snowman (I've got loads of others so add whichever one you like the sound of to your friends list), Business The Hustla, Epyon The Spartan, Spawn The PIMP and Tsubasa The Stunter.

Re: guild wars
Should be no problem, I play it on my old desktop with a 2.66Ghz P4 and a Geforce4 Ti4200, although there is some stutter in crowded places. I would probably recommend Nightfall? Since it's the newest one, there will be a lot more people around and its better overall than the other two sets imo.

Re: guild wars
i have a question about guild wars and how it works. i've played WoW and wanted to try out guild wars. from the product descriptions (at lesat on amazon) it seems more "campaign" oriented.
if i remember, from what i saw friends playing, its an MMO, where you can quest/pvp online with other people isn't it? or is that just the original?
if anyone could do a comparison with WoW, (not about graphics, gameplay, but more about the general game)

if anyone could do a comparison with WoW, (not about graphics, gameplay, but more about the general game) I think Guild Wars is terrible. I bought it thinking it would be the next great Diablo II, but it failed. I would not say it is more "campaign" oriented, but group oriented. Each character is extremely weak and needs to work in a group of 8 people to defeat even moderately strong enemies. I have not played WoW, but I do own Diablo II LoD. In my opinion Diablo II LoD is a much better game. If WoW is anything like Diablo II, it is also a much better game.

Re: guild wars
I've played Guild Wars for over two years now. Thing is, the PvP has always been the best of any current RPGs (MMO or not). This still holds true even now that ArenaNet has alienated long time players with poor balances, slow response and broken promises. Many newcomers like you will probably like it because it is a bit more "accessable" now... I guess.
However, what is sacrificed is the PvE. It's not bad, but it's not good either. If you're used to something like WoW then just stick with it if you can afford the monthly cost. In all honesty, I'd recommend picking up something like Oblivion before you do the same with "Build" Wars...
On to your questions... If you still want to pick it up, look for Prophecies or Nightfall. The first is, well, the first installment of the game and has been the only one that I could even tolerate playing through for PvE. Nightfall is the latest and will probably have more activity in those districts. Also, it can run on pretty much anything and your setup should extremely well (60+ frames for sure unless you're running everything on high with post-process effects).

do most of the people play player vs player or do most play campaign?

Re: guild wars
Guild Wars should play with no problems on your laptop; it's not really a graphically intensive game by today's standards IMO. (Although it does still look nice)
You should first try getting Prophecies, the original Guild Wars, although the three currently out are all stand alone games. If not, get Nightfall for the newer content like heroes.
The one thing I do like about it is that a strong character requires mainly what kind of skills you're going to use; you're only allotted 8 skills to use at any one time. And even the most solid build will usually have some sort of weakness. The original Guild Wars is somewhat soloable in the sense that you don't have to really interact with other people, but as Homer Jay pointed out, you'll almost always need a group. But I don't feel that really detracts from the game; interaction with other players (albeit some rude ones) is one major factor to play MMOs in the first place.

Re: guild wars
hmm see i quit wow (with a big payout)
im looking for something with some pve but definitely needs to have pvp. WoW had a good amount of both. its just that i read a description online, and you can "pause" the game in the middle of a quest? got confused...i like questing/pvping in an mmo setting.
also, the other thing is with the 3-4different guild wars installments, do you only play with people who have that game, or ...yea got confused. for WoW, most people only play the expansion part of the game now...as the original is for low level areas.
WoW is not the same game as diablo - definitely different even though its the same idea (a lot better imo)

Re: guild wars
I used to play GW on a 2.0ghz p4 with a radeon 8500...and I could play it with the settings maxed, it's definitely no system hog (and plays windowed mode too!).
I like Prophecies but it's hard to recommend it now because no one plays the pve on that anymore...unlike when it first came out every town was packed, they're almost all deserted now. Most of the remaining players are all in the pvp or farming in certain areas. There is however an official expansion for it coming out later in September me thinks. Then again Hellgate London should be coming out later this year too...
