Battlefield 2

Question:
Battlefield 2
Hi I have an Dell Inspiron e1505. My question concerns battlefield 2. I want to know any tips on how to improve the performance of the game. The laptop sports the go 7300 turbocache chipset(I know I should have opted for the X1400). i run and 800x600 and low settings and get choppy performance. sometimes i will crash to desktop as well. the dell currently has 1gig of ram and the 1.83ghz core duo. would more ram be benficial or is the go 7300 unable to hack it. I would appreciate any info offered.

To run BF2 smoothly you need at least 1.5 GB of ram.

Re: Battlefield 2
Right now your problem is a lack of RAM as noted. I remember running BF2 on my Sager when it only had 1GB of RAM and it stuttered a lot because the game used up all of my available system RAM and Windows started using the hard drive for RAM via the Page file, which is extremely slow.
You can test this for yourself - watch your hard drive activity light next time you game. If it is blinking frequently or on all the time then you definitely have a RAM issue.
What's making things worse for you still is the fact that your video card shares some of your system memory and running out of system memory is hurting both your video performance and the game's performance.
For now, I'd suggest downloading FRAPS to see what kind of frames per second you are getting. Ideally, you want to maintain 40FPS or so; if you are dropping below 30 (which is the minimum necessary for smooth gameplay) the lower your settings until the vast majority of your framerates stay above 30.

Be sure to turn off Anti-Aliasing (AA) and AF. Turing down shadows would also help. If you could post a screenshot of your settings we could help more.

I actually ran BF2 on a 512mb RAM/x300 machine awhile back. Other then extremely long loading times and overall stuttering gameplay, on the lowest settings it was barely playable. Never outright crashed on me tho.

I think it's wrong to say you need 1.5Gb ram to play BF2, I play it on my notebook sometimes and I have 1gb, alongside my 7400 TC so essentially I have about 804mb free or whatever (in reality much less even so, as programs take up a considerable chunk, but thats applicable to all machines). BF2 runs smoothly all the time, the only reason you'd 'need' 1.5Gb if is you're running the game at higher settings, and thus needing more memory for textures, in which case yes 1.5Gb would be nice.
But with 1gb of Ram and a Go7300, you're going to hit your ceiling long before you actually need need 1.5Gb of ram.
I'm not quite sure what your problem is, as you have plenty of ram in this instance and the Go7300 is weak but totally capable of playing BF2 on low-mid settings without any stutter. Make sure dynamic lighting and shadows are on low or off, those settings kill the lower end cards.

No, I mean, you really do need at least 1.5gb of RAM to run BF2 or BF2142 at anything better than ultra-low settings and a low resolution, it really is a RAM hog.

Re: Battlefield 2
I would suggest getting another gig of RAM. It's only like $40 on newegg, and that's something that will help in lots of stuff.

Re: Battlefield 2
You dont need FRAPS to see your ingame FPS. You just open up the console and type in "renderer.drawfps 1" without the quotations.

It made quite a difference.:D :D
