Connect computers by firewire

Question:
Connect computers by firewire
I want to transfer file from my desk top (SONY RX550, XP Home) to my notebook (Dell 6000d, XP Pro) by firewire (SONY i.LINK). After I pluged the IEEE 1394 cable in both computers, I don't see any change. Nothing new in My Computer or Printer and Fax. Only when I unpluged it, the computers showed disconnection in the lower right corner. I tried to update the drive in Device Manager and didn't work. Can anyone tell me how to transfer? Do I need to set up a network? Thanks.
Answer: could i do the same thing with a USB cable?

Answer: First firewire needs to be set up as a network device (with approraite settings in any security software you use). THen the easiest way is to have on computer off, plug in the firewire, the start the computer. Also don't have it connected to the internet through LAN or 802.11 (wireless).
Samwise: I do not believe USB networking is possible.
Answer:
YES you can. you need a special data cable. I'll get you a link to one in a few minutes!
[EDIT]: this is what you want. this emulates a regular wired 802.3 network thru the software that comes bundled with it: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=12-189-001&depa=0

Answer: Thanks for everyone's help. It's just too much trouble to set up a network for firewire. I will use USB hard drive to transfer files instead.
