Question:
Free HD partition software
I could just go to any software site and display by rating, but i would like to know, from computer-notebook users experience, what's the best free HD partition software.
Thanks
PS: if it's shareware but is really good it's ok...

Re: Free HD partition software
Partition Magic is probably the best but it isn't free. (It has a trial period)
As for free ones I don't know of any good ones.

Re: Free HD partition software
GParted has always worked for me.
Of course I also ALWAYS backup everything first before even attempting a partitioning operation.

Re: Free HD partition software
Should i choose primary, logical or extended for non OS partitions?
Only plan to have one OS.
I'll do something like i read on this board tutorials:
C for XP; D for swap file; E for games; F for data
Thanks for the feedback

Re: Free HD partition software
Since you're only making four partitions you can just make them all primary. I'd also recommend the use of GParted, but I usually just partition using Disk Management in Computer Management, which you can find under Administrative Tools.

Re: Free HD partition software
just for info so you know should you ever buy these....
partition magic will not work on vista...symatic who i think now own it:( (norton) stopped supporting anything higher than xp and they have said they will not continue production on any further version higher than v8 so if you need a very close looking and just as good program which is what i use for vista its called Paragon Partition Manager v8.5 Professional .. as stated this supports vista and in every aspect is a twin for partition magic.
as for free software im not sure as vista software is still a bit lacking in some areas but try google:)
goodluck

Re: Free HD partition software
I guess I'm really old school.
I have a bootable CD that boots into DOS 6.22 and has the basic utility commands (ATTRIB, FDISK, FORMAT, ...) on it. Then I can install whatever I want afterwards. I last used it on a Dell Inspiron 5100 to wipe it clean and remove the recovery partition so I could install a fresh XP.

Re: Free HD partition software
sometimes, the old ways are the best--ran into this problem tonight where a linux install gone bad hoarked up the master boot record on a disk and I could do nothing with it in Windows XP or Linux to get it back.
I was going to debug the drive, but good old DOS 6.22 fdisk managed to clean out the garbage as the second to last attempt.
That said, here are some more freebies
