You will most likely not need Ultimate...unless you want (long delayed) Ultimate Extras or business features. I'd suggest you upgrade to Home Premium, though, to get Aero, Media Center and more entertainment options.

I also think the best benefit to price ratio is with the Home Premium version, the rest are just little extra here and there but nothing grand.

I'm not using it for business or anything, just for school, movies, and games... Home Premium is better (for the money)?

Ultimate Extras, like Dreamscene (not released yet, but its been previewed and in Beta), are found in Ultimate and not found in Home Premium. But remember, this "cool" feature is very heavy on system resources.

What's in the Extras? And by system resources, do you only mean RAM and Harddrive space? Or do you mean RAM, HD, Processor, AND GPU?

None that matter for the average user (students, etc)

Ultimate Extras doesn't offer much:
Windows DreamScene, a utility that allows videos to be used as desktop backgrounds.
BitLocker and EFS Enhancements, two tools (Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool and Secure Online Key Backup) that facilitate the use of security features in Windows Vista.
Hold 'Em Poker Game, a version of Texas hold 'em.
MUI language packs, add-ons that allow Windows to be displayed in another language.
Upcoming: Group Shot, a photo editing program developed by Microsoft Research.
Just trust me, you will not need Vista Ultimate. Home Premium is enough for your tasks, Ultimate will be excessive.
