8600gs vs 8600gt
Is there really that big of a difference? I would like to keep things cheap so if there isnt a big difference between the two I hope to go with the 8600gs. And is there a huge differnce between these two and the 8400?

yes and yes.
i dont know if another comparison to computer hardware will help to quantify this for you, but the 8600m gs is basically equal to a go 7600/7700, whereas the 8600m gt is approximately equal to a 7900 gs.
(that is in terms of dx9 horsepower, obviously they have the wider feature set advantage)

It really depends on the factory clock speed. I have a GS and I can overlock it that it gets a 3dmark06 score of 3500. Make sure you check the clock speeds prior to purchasing it. So to answer your question, it can be a huge difference but if you do your research, then you may find a laptop in which the difference isn't so big. But there definitely is a difference. Also again, if you are looking at the 8400 M G or GS yes, there is a difference. But the 8400m GT is pretty close to the 8600m GS.

The short answer to your question is yes, there is a big difference in the performance. The price difference is justified for the increase performance but we can't help you unless you fill out the FAQ so we know what you need.

thats true- its not like one is worthless. they are just targeted towards different markets. you would have to clock the 8600gs pretty far beyond the nvidia spec clocks before you could ever get performance like a gt, though. mostly this is because the gt has 32 shaders vs 16 for the gs.

what i mean is can they both play games smoothely, but the GT can play them in higher quality? I checked the specs and the gs looked better in everything but stream processors.

Yes, that's correct I would say expect the same performance with the 8600m gs on med and the GT on high.

The 8600M GS should do for most games, but if you really want to have high settings on everything, go for the 8600M GT.
Also, I read somewhere that an 8600M GS is basically an overclocked 8400M GT. (might've been super obvious to all the smart people out there)

All i can say is if you like playing games and want to futureproof your laptop for games, Get the 8600gt. The gs and 8400 are much much lower in terms of graphics performance.
