Life Time Of Dx10

Question:
Life Time Of Dx10
Microsoft is in deep waters, Vista sucks and they are getting rid of it in 2010 which is not far away. Vista uses DX10 so will this new system(Number 7) use something like DX11.
This could make the gaming laptop market a slow time because of how fast DX10 video cards are going to be outdated. Plus the DX11??? graphics cards are probably not going to be in any of todays DX10 MXM formats.

Re: Life Time Of Dx10
Ah forced upgrades.... Microsoft should really learn something about their customers.
About 70% of people I know still use XP and most of those who have Vista were suckered into getting it with their laptop/PC.
I seriously think OpenGL 3.0 will be the next preferred graphics API and not D3D.

I wonder if the new OS will at least be a bit less demanding that Vista -.- It's an operating system, I don't need any of this graphic-intensive Vista crap.

I wouldn't worry about DX too much. While Microsoft does heavily influence the market, Vista's acceptance is considered a flop by several big name vendors ( Acer, IBM, Sony, probably more ). Vista will be accepted though, the sheer fact that it is your only choice on many new computers ( Dell, HP, ... ) means you will take it.
But now look at the computing world from a market standpoint, DX enables windows games, it is the bread and butter for creating high end graphics on windows. The video game industry alone rivals Microsoft ( yes an entire industry put together lol ). That is 1 smaller sector of the market. They can and do sway Microsoft. The fact that DX10 is intended for release only on vista has already been clouded several times. Ultimately they state it will only be on Vista for XXX reason, but the fact they have had to waiver on the issue is enough. The issue isn't even an issue yet to the mainstream.......... because DX10 games do not exist in the market. When these games are released
1) Game producers could careless what OS you run on - they want sales
2) Game producers do not want to code 2 branches for a game DX9 and DX10 that is too expensive
3) DX10 has already been ported to XP via renegade programmers
Now when these DX10 games are released and you don't have the expected sales numbers, the game producers are not going to blame their product ( even if the game sucked ), they will blame Microsoft. There is a truckload of money on the table here and Microsoft is already in continuous hot water because of their market dominance.
Chances are, you will see DX10 magically released on XP even though "it is impossible"
The same will hold true in the future. This is business, money talks and Microsoft is dependent on these industries using Windows as their main platform.
And btw, the next release of windows will be more like an Apple OSX release or a Linux release. Fewer massive changes, in favor of a yearly stream of smaller upgrades. They also want to migrate to a subscription based OS. Instead of paying $150, you pay $60 a year and must activate once a year.

Vista isn't all THAT demanding. It's just that it's een ages since the last Windows release, and hardware specs have improved significantly since then, so it seems like a huge jump. Although I agree Vista seems a bit bloated at times.
If you remember back in the days, Microsoft really did try to release a new OS every other year or so, so 2009-2010 isn't such a huge deal....

Re: Life Time Of Dx10
Vista is pretty damn demanding for an OS. Consider what an OS is really meant to do. Provide a platform for me to run applications on. That is it. No more, no less.
Anyway, what makes you think DX10 will become obsolete just because the next Windows comes out?
First, you don't know that DX11 will coincide with Windows 7, do you?
And second, is DX9 obsolete yet? DX10 has been out for half a year, and how many DX10 games do you see on the market?
How many *exclusive* DX10 games do you see?
Until a year or two ago, you could get by with DX8 hardware, even. And DX9 has been out for 6 years or so by now.
Games will support DX9 as long as there's a market for it. And then they'll support DX10 as long as there's a market for it.

http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/windows_7.asp This one part is a bit muddy for me:
Q: So is Windows 7 going to be a major Windows version?
A: Yes. Windows Vista was a major release, and Windows 7 will be also be a major update. Microsoft is currently on a development path where every other Windows version is a major release, so it's possible we'll see a minor OS update between Vista and Windows 7. If every other Windows version is a major release, then Windows 7 would not be considered "major" by this current path policy. It says we may see a "minor" os update in between, but Windows 7 is referred to as an update itself. Typos?
