Question:
Vista - Start menu folder creation does not work
So I did like I always do, organized the files and folders in the start menu.
Under start menu I have folders for
Programs (default)
Microsoft (for all MS stuff)
Music (for music apps)
Move (for Movie stuff, Codec config, etc)
Tools
and so on
The problem is that none of these new folders will expand in the start menu. When I click them nothing happens, double click, RMB and explore....nada.
What do I have to do to make them operate correctly?

How and where did you actually create the folders? It took me a while to figure out I had to do this in:
C:\Users\yournamehere\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

RMB'd over the 'ball' and Explore All Users
The path seems to be
ProgramData>Microsoft>Windows>StartMenu

ACCESS DENIED
(yes, I'm an admin)
ACCESS DENIED in all of the following
Documents and SEttings
ProgramData
Users
Basically I can't do a damn thing in any of those folders. WTF?
----edit
Oh sh_t. It hadn't accepted my domain admin privilege, but I changed that logged out/in and it's the same thing. ACCESS DENIED
Wait a minute. How can I be logged in as a user w/o Admin and give myself Admin and have it accept the change? it did.

Re: Vista - Start menu folder creation does not work
Well, my location is for a specific user. Your location is for "all users". I was able to RightMouseButton and explore for all users as you suggested. I then created a folder. I was NOT able to drag any shortcut to that folder in the Startmenu itself, BUT I could drag shortcuts to that folder when it was open in a Windows Explorer window. THEN I could click Start | MyNewFolder| and it would open and show the shortcuts I'd placed ether via Windows Explorer.
Now as to why you had permissions issues with my suggested location I have no clue.

I organized mine similarly, but consolidated them under All Users (C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\) rather than under my specific user profile. If you right-click on the Windows Start icon, select Properties, Start Menu tab, and Customize and there are more options for how it all looks and behaves.
My folders expand on a single click.
Also, check Start/Control Panel/System and Maintenance/Indexing Options and ensure that Start Menu is included. If you have performed extensive changes to the Start Menu, you may want to use the Rebuild option on the Advanced tab. Be prepared ... Rebuild takes a long time.

Re: Vista - Start menu folder creation does not work
Ahhh, got it.
The folders can no longer go in the Start Menu, they have to go in Start Menu>Programs
Then somehow it knows that even though they are already in programs that they are a folder and to break them out so it'll actually display as
Microsoft
Movie
Program
Games
etc
Thanks for the help

Re: Vista - Start menu folder creation does not work
Alternatively, you can make great use of that start menu search. Just type in the name (or some key words) and choose from the list. Eventually this might be faster than customizing folders and realizing that you can only do what vista lets you do.
Unless you disable UAC. In which case I think you regain some control over your personal computer. ;)

Already disabled that annoying UAC thing. Sheesh, what were they thinking?
No worries, I got it working. Just had to understand how Vista has changed. Thanks.

The Start Menu Search still works even after customizing folders.
