Instead of giving up, you could tells us the problem with your Vista, so we can help you to find a solution.
Personally Vista is wonderful, not a single problem on my laptop and It's running pretty fast.

I'm having a similar experience with Vista x64. I wasn't originally planning on installing it before SP1 came out, but an unfortunate accident forced me to accelerate my time-table a bit. (Windows XP was corrupted.)
And so far, I don't regret it. Not by a long shot. The install was super easy (It even natively detected my RAID array), and its been running surprisingly fast. I've not yet had the opportunity to test out any games, but if it handles games as well as it has handled everything else I think I'll be quite content to stick with Vista. Whats really nice is that Vista solved a number of the hardware incompatibilities that I was experiencing with Windows XP.

And do you have a Dell Vostro 1500 with all the same options as he does? No? Then your data point is useless. He said his problem was the system was locking up every 10 minutes, which could be many things, but is usually driver related. Shocker there, drivers that are required to do much more than just interface with hardware (such as inspect all your data to make sure you aren't an evil "pirate") can become unstable...
I've found that Linux is wonderful, without a single problem on my laptop, and it runs even faster than Windows. Must mean any problems you might have with it are imaginary ;)

I agree with Pitabred on this one. Troubleshooting a problem like that is extremely difficult, and I would know; the Satellite A70 is known to suffer from random shutdowns because the speakers are improperly grounded, meaning that a mere ESD from a hand could shutdown the computer. The problem and solution seem obvious once you have heard it, but without Toshiba's technical bulletin I probably never would have found the cause of the problem. Finding the cause to the OT's problems is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Vista 64Bit seems much more stable than 32bit. I had too many problems on 32bit to keep it on my system, but 64bit is pretty solid and faster (given you have 2gb).
I just don't see a real reason yet for Vista when XP is still the better OS. Maybe after Vista SP2.

Just wondering: does Vista inspect files in FS other than MS?
I mean, Vista was forced on my Vostro (in my country there is no xp option) and I can't lose time to get a refund right now. So I will be using Vista and a temporary Linux distro before I find the time to braze the disk and install my Linux - XP pro dual boot.
Will Vista mess up with , or only peek into, my ext3 partitions?
(I am keeping vista because that's the only rapid way to check that the laptop is working properly and has no hardware problems)

Now wait a minute, that is completely unfair. There's absolutely no way you can dismiss someone's offer to help w/o at least going into a little more detail. It's not fair to people who use Vista, nor is fair to people who are trying to work through their Vista issues. Maybe someone else has this same problem, but if all you're going to do is whine about Vista w/o at least trying to troubleshoot the actual problem you are helping no one.
