Question:
External DX10 Video Card For Notebooks!
I bought an ASUS W2J notebook around 1 year ago, and bought it because of its powerful proccessor and amazing mobility ATI X1600 video card.
It was brilliant back then and up until now. But now that computer (PC) games are going into their new generation of gaming (DX10). My card is kinda useless now. And having a notebook/laptop you cant add NEW hardware onto it (correct me if im wrong).
I'm inquiring if there's any chances of getting new hardware like a NVIDIA HD card externally or internally, which supports DX10?
Thats the only thing i hate about laptops, and that is (well what ive heard) that is you cant upgrade video cards!

Re: External DX10 Video Card For Notebooks!
There are very FEW laptops that have upgraded video parts. Usually about less than 5% of them really. I don't know about yours exactly but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. As for an external video card.. I've never heard of one to be honest with you.
If you see your laptop in the following chart then you can upgrade the video card using an MXM video card, it'd be type II for you.

If it's not there then I really don't know what to tell you...

there ARE external GFX-solutions, though they may not be suitable for gaming (no idea about that)
MSI has Luxium for example
and there are others
I also believe one of the drawbacks is that you'll have to use an external monitor

Asus XG Station looks ideal but it still hasn't been released.

Re: External DX10 Video Card For Notebooks!
that's the one i was originally looking for :p
but, as i said, you'll need an external monitor to use it!
as for upgrading GFX on a laptop, there is (slowly) developping a standard for this: MXM (see link from Sprintguy) ... so, in a few years, when you want to buy a new laptop, it'll probably be possible to replace the GFX without 2 much problems :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Asus XG Station was planed with a 7900gs so it's kinda useless now...

Re: External DX10 Video Card For Notebooks!
Those external video solutions are basically made for the video-editing market. Bah. I miss the All-in-Wonder ATI Radeons. I wonder why ATI stopped making them. My dad's PC still has the All-in-Wonder ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I always use it for capturing my videos.

Re: External DX10 Video Card For Notebooks!
DX10 games are just starting to come out, and almost every game will be DX9 with a small improvement if using DX10. Your laptop is fine for now. If I were you I'd keep my eye out for the 8800m laptops to start coming out in about a year and upgrade at that point.
