Question:
? about wireless
Hello all,
I just bought a new compaq V2312US, I'm needing to know if a Linksys 2.4 GHz 802.11b adapter will work with a wireless 802.11g router? I'm new at this and I want to make my internet connection as secure as possible. Any info will be greatly appreciated!!
Thank You.

Re: ? about wireless
Yes it will work fine. All G products are backwards compatible with B. It's just like USB 1.1 & 2.0, the newer product will work only as fast as the older product allows.
To make your network secure you'll first want to change the default password. Make the password as strong as possible (password tips: http://www.networkclue.com/passwords.php). The next step is to enable encryption, there are different types: WEP (oldest and weakest), WPA, WPA2, are some that I'm familiar with. If all you have is WEP you still want to use it. It's better then nothing and the idea isn't to rely on one feature alone anyway, you want to do layered security.
After your network is up and running you'll want to disable broadcasting. Broadcasting makes it easy for computers to find your computer and connect to them. It's very usefull when your first setting up the network but after that you really don't want people to even know you have a network. Turning broadcasting off makes your network invisible.
After that just apply all the basic rules you would apply for normal web surfing: using an easy to use firewall; having an up-to-date antivirus; and using anti-spyware software with active protect that prevents new threats from installing in the first place.
