Question:
Battlefield 2 problem
Hello. I have a Dell inspiron 9300 (1.73 pentium M, 80 gig 5400 rpm hard drive, gig of ram, 256 geforce 6800). The problem is when I play battlefeild 2, my ping is around 50-90 ms, but I'm still lagging. What is going on? often times I'll get a message saying "There is a problem wtih your connection." I have no other problems with CS:Source. I have turned off the firewall and everything. Why am I still lagging?

Re: Battlefield 2 problem
Are you running with WiFi or LAN? I've heard of lags when running with WiFi since it can't keep up with the constant data transmissions (that might have been 802.11b). Try it on LAN if it's not an see if it helps.
If it's already on LAN, chane to make sure that your LAN card is setup to be full duplexing (under the NIC card properties).

Yes I am running the game through wifi. But I mean with a ping of 50 ms, i still don't see why it's lagging.

Re: Battlefield 2 problem
Hey i have battlefield 2 as well but I have a HP zd8000 with internal 802.11 b/g wireless network card. I sometimes have that problem when I play it wirelessly but mostly I get pings around 40 and occasionally it will say theres a problem with my connection when I play Wi Fi. For you I would suggest playing over LAN if its a consistent problem, sometimes I play on lan and my ping is around 15- 20 (!). So yeah I agree with what Venombite said, thats what is most likely going on.

Re: Battlefield 2 problem
Hmm. Interesting. There is a bit of lag over wifi.
I used to use b wireless playing source, and I got 30-40 ping usually. Now, I use g wireless and I have a 10-20 ping :D
BTW, I use a netgear router (g), and Comcast 6MBPs Cable (actually its around 4.2.)

Re: Battlefield 2 problem
I play BF2 over my wifi (g network) with ease and no lag at all. Only time it really lags is when I am far away from my wifi (outside), but inside it isnt that bad. But if your a true gamer, then just stick to the good old cat5 cable.

There are three possible solutions to this:
1) Your wifi is being dumb. You can fix this by right clicking My Computer > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > + Network Adaptors > right click Intel(R) PRO wireless and then customize its options. I find that forcing mine on the wireless B network (I have a B router) and disabling the A and G bands stablizes my connection and eliminates the lag problems. Also, make sure your channel is set the same as your router.
2) There are more bugs in Battlefield 2 than keys on a full sized keyboard. I've also had a lot of problems with disconnects and lag on every system I've tried to play the game on and a variety of internet connections. EA did a very poor job with the netcode given the complexity of all the stats collection (which I think ruins the game. I hate the stats. It kills teamwork and rewards for points).
3) Play on a different server. Some servers are absolutely horrible and seem to vary on stability from day to day. Some of the ZBoard and official EA servers can be the worst for me in dealing with lag. Divo.net and a few Gamespot servers seem to be ok, but they all get weird. Actually, Zboard NY was completely stable tonight until it randomly booted me for who knows what reason.
Besides, in a few weeks you'll probably dislike the game just as I have come to do. It's not really fun anymore and the requirements for ranks and unlocks are out of this world.

Re: Battlefield 2 problem
I have always seemed to have good connection with the zboard servers when I play on Wifi. However as Dragon mentioned about the game getting old in a few weeks, I have to disagree. This game depends a lot of what kind of gamer you are in FPS games. If you like using strategy and are able to find a good squad to play in rather than go lone wolf all the time, I gurantee the game will be 100x times more fun that way. Plus I dont see how the stats ruin the game? There are stats for combat and teamwork, how does that kill teamwork?

Stats record everything. The basis in which promotions, unlocks, medals, and ribbons are awarded is what kills the entire stats system. It rewards you with points for how you perform regardless of in a squad. Points drive the entire system. It ruins the game since it encourages people to exploit, cheat, "stat pad", teamkill, and do other things to butcher the game's ability to have teamwork. Because of the absurdly high requirements of unlocks, medals, and ribbons many people play just to get the points to acquire the said objects rather than playing teamwork or playing the game smartly.
I cannot even begin to count the number of times I've had some idiot friendly soldier put C4 on my vehicle (normally a tank) to blow me up until I let him drive, teamkill me as I sit in a blackhawk just to sit in my place and rack up points instead of me, teamkill destroy my artillery and scanning abilities when I'm commander so they can go hide off the edge of the map and point farm with a few enemies, teamkill me for trying to help capture a flag so they can get 4 points for a neutralize+capture instead of 2 for a double assist, or even run out infront of my jet or other vehicle to try to make me stop or else I run them over and get a -8 points punish for their own stupidity. I can go on and on over this list but I think you get the point. Hell, I've even been shot at by an enemy who was inside a fuel cylinder wall and was exploiting on the map. I've been mowed down by blackhawks that just swoop down, capture flags, and then fly off with total disregard to defense because they get 4 points for the capture instead of 2 for the defense of a flag. Etc. etc.
What kills this game is that emphasis on points. Unlocks should be awarded for time in a given kit. Say you play sniper for 10 hours. Well then you should get the M95 unlock. Or you play Spec Ops for 10 hours. Then you should get the G36. You shouldn't have to gather up 1,000 points for the first unlock, 10,000 for the second, 25,000 for the third, 50,000 for the fourth, 75,000 for the fifth, 100,000 for the sixth, etc. They should be awarded for given time playing their specific classes. This way people can't exploit or cheat to gather points.
Second, the ranks in this game are also awarded on the basis of points and directly tied with the unlocks. Because they award for points you can lone wolf everything and get the same amount or more than what a squad member gets since so few squads actually employ teamwork online. The ranks should be given out on the basis of how long you're a squad member, squad leader, or commander and how well you do. Make the first rank, private first clas, for playing for 5 hours. Lance Corporal at 10 hours. Corporal at 20 hours, next 40 hours, then 80, etc. Reward for time in a leadership cooperative teamwork role. If needed, attach points to those hourly requirements to make sure people are actually playing the game right instead of wasting time.
Ribbons and medals should be awarded for global lifetime acheivements or for particular battles, but they shouldn't have the outrageous requirements some have right now. In fact, with the reduced ticket ratios on many servers it's actually impossible to get a few medals because their requirements exceed what can be done in the allotted amount of time on a server, unless you cheat. I want to keep the medals for being one of the top players on the server, but give out things like armor badges based on the total number of lifetime kills. Not basic for 10 kills on a map, advanced for 30, and expert for like 60 kills or something. Right now I can't even keep track of all the requirements for the medals and ribbons because some are just outrageous.
Rewarding for points in Battlefield 2 ruins the game and that's what the stats system is all about. It's rare that I actually see teamwork on servers, and I've logged some 55 hours playing online on this game. Stats is killing it and encouraging cheats and exploiters to take advantage of the game at the cost of regular players like myself. I get really into games like UT2004, Doom 3, HL2, CS:S, and many others, but BF2 is more often frustrating than it is fun. In the past 20 or so hours I've logged in this game last night was the first fun time I can remember in a long time. I sat in a tank as an engineer sitting next to another engineer in another tank. We'd repair each other just by being close and were parked right outside the MEC base in Gulf Of Oman. We'd open fire on any attack choppers or jets that attempted to take off and wiped out any enemy forces regardless of what they were. We had full control of their base and there was nothing the enemy could do. We sat there the entire time ignoring requests for help elsewhere on the map because we were racking up points like crazy while being practically invincible. Why was this fun? Because I had the number 3 score on the server after it was all said and done. No teamwork, no communication, no helping friendlies...just a ton of points for being an ass to the other team and ignoring everyone else on our own team. If the stats system didn't award for points then we wouldn't have done what we did with those two tanks.
Stats ruins the game. The game is supposed to be about teamwork and skill, not points. It doesn't require skill to get points since it's so easy to just hop in a blackhawk or hide off the map with a bunch of medics and keep reviving all sorts of people. Points and stats suck since they're not implemented correctly. Fix them and then I'll love em.
