Question:
How To Partition HDD which has non unlocated space?
Hey everyone, just got my Toshiba M40 and was wondering how on earth do i partition the HDD. My recovery disc has windows xp pro and the thing is it's a ghost image so i can't install like i use a windows xp disk and partition when asked. Any ideas? i don't wannt use partition magic as apprently its not as stable (meaning, if i have a corrupted partition magic, my HDD is as good a gone) i would like my HDD to be such that i can have my OS in a 10 Gb HD sector and the rest else where so when i reinstall my OS when it gets infected with virus (which happens alot) or i feel its too lagggy, i can just pop the installation disk in and reinstall windows without affecting the rest of the files. Any help guys? PLS HELP! :) Oh, my sister has the same problem as well, so i'm suppose to find out how to partition the HDD that way. Thanks again.

You have a win XP CD (the regular edition, not an image)?
If you do, you can just use the initial setup procedure to delete current partitions and create partions of the size you want. Otherwise you might wanna try and find some software that does Partition magic's job.

there is a live distro of linux that has a partitioning tool. It handles NTFS, so you should be good, but i cant remember the name of the distro.

yea thats correct. you can use qwester's idea. thats what i did. during the format procedure you can delete or create partition with winxp cd. its really easy if you go through that.

Partition Magic is fine. I have not heard of any issue with the new version of PM. Maybe with older version there might have been problems, but v8.x is just fine. I have partitoned HDD's using this at work and everything seemed to work fine.

Normally, if you use the XP CD, you would have to format, but Partition Magic will allow you to partition the drive without formatting. Just make sure you don't drop the size smaller than the amount of used space as this may cause problem with your data. So, if you have a 60GB HDD, and 30GB used, don't make the C: partition smaller than 30+GB.
