home networking

Question:
home networking
Not sure if this is a hardware or software question, but I'm sure it'll be moved if I'm in the wrong place.
About to get a new laptop and router, am leaving my old desktop in place for the time being. Planning to put the router between the cable modem and CPU of the antique (1999) Dell. Is there a way I will be able to easily access files I leave on the old Dell, or given that it's Windows ME (I know, I know) should I just transfer everything over?
Thanks

Re: home networking
It would just be easier to get a crossover cable and switch things over by that. But to network, you need to have one computers ip address set to 192.168.1.100 and the other "dell" to 192.168.1.101 Thats how each computer finds another. You need to disable your firewall to.
Your right, this is a wireless and networking thread, definatly not a hardware. ;)

Re: home networking
Why don't you map a network drive in windows? No need for a crossover cable.

Re: home networking
yes, if all the computers are going to be networked there's no need for a xover cable. just map a drive or browse via explorer.
